Referee with positive Burnley record to take charge of Cardiff City clash

Everything you need to know about this weekend’s referee

Burnley head to Cardiff City this weekend as Fabio Celestini eyes his first win.

The Clarets’ new boss has drawn back-to-back games in his first two fixtures in charge, having only taken over last Wednesday.

Burnley played out a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth, before being pegged back to draw 1-1 at QPR in midweek.

It leaves them rooted inside the Championship’s bottom three with just one win to their name all season - and four points adrift of safety.

This weekend they face a Cardiff side that squandered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with West Ham on Wednesday night.

Who is the referee for Cardiff v Burnley?

Oliver Langford.

He’s overseen nine games so far this season, dishing out 32 yellow cards and just one red.

Eight of his nine fixtures have come in the Championship, with the other encounter coming in League Two.

Looking back to last season, Langford oversaw 28 games, handing out 89 yellows - at an average of 3.17 per game - and five reds.

He started his refereeing journey in 1995 and was promoted to Select Group 2 for the 2016/17 season when the list was created.

Since then, Langford has refereed two play-off semi-finals and the 2017 FA Youth Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City.

Langford has refereed over 500 games in the EFL throughout his career to date.

What history does he have with Burnley?

This will be his first Burnley game since March 2025, when Langford oversaw the 2-0 away win at Swansea City.

In fact, Langford took charge of three 2-0 Burnley wins that season as the Clarets won promotion back to the Premier League under Scott Parker, with him also being the man in the middle for the victories at Stoke City and Swansea City.

During Vincent Kompany’s promotion season, Langford also took charge of three games: the 2-1 win against Bristol City, the 2-1 victory at Swansea and the 0-0 draw at Reading.

Who are the other officials?

Nigel Lugg and Harley McKittrick will run the line, while Tom Parsons is fourth official.
