SMX Next expands in 2027 with 10 companions to Supercross and Motocross plus 2 playoff rounds

The SMX Next schedule will expand to 10 regular season rounds in 2027 with an additional two rounds run during the SuperMotocross Playoffs.

Beginning with Anaheim 2 at Angel Stadium on January 22-23, the feeder series for SuperMotocross encompasses the entire calendar and will conclude with the Pro Motocross finale at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on August 27-28.

Five races will be held as companion events with Supercross and five with Motocross, which gives equal weight to the two disciplines. Another pair of races will be held on the hybrid tracks during the Playoffs in Rounds 1 and 2. Those venues have not yet been announced.

The SMX Next Supercross fields will be comprised of 25-rider fields with participants scoring points in the first four rounds with those events to set the stage for the SMX Next Showdown in the fifth and final stadium round at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Points will continue to accumulate during five outdoor rounds, which will determine the seeding for the playoffs, known as the SMX Next World all-Stars.

“We’ve achieved tremendous success since the introduction of SMX Next, but as the program continues to grow it’s important that we continue to do our part in creating a streamlined and defined path to the professional level of the SMX World Championship,” said Mike Muye, Sr. Director of Supercross, Feld Motor Sports. “Expanding SMX Next to not only unify Supercross and Pro Motocross events but also establish an equal balance of each discipline is crucial to proper athlete development.

“Moreover, this expansion provides an opportunity to properly showcase these prospects on the sport’s biggest stage with tentpole events throughout the calendar season.”

At the end of the regular season, the top 15 prospects in combined SMX Next points, Supercross plus Pro Motocross, will automatically qualify and be seeded for the SMX Next World All-Stars.

The newly announced SMX Next Australia, the program’s first regional expansion outside the United States, will see up to three prospects qualify for the postseason based on combined points from SMX Next races held during the AUSX Supercross Championship, which is currently taking place through the end of November.

Four additional prospects will be selected by invitation to establish a field of 22 athletes for the postseason.

“It’s been incredible to be a part of the rapid growth of the SMX Next program,” said Tim Cotter, Vice President, MX Sports Pro Racing. “What began as a passion driven initiative to foster the sport’s next generation of professional talent has evolved into a pioneering development program spanning two continents. Based on the almost immediate impact several SMX Next graduates have had in the SMX World Championship, which includes the likes of Haiden Deegan and Cole Davies, it’s been proven time and time again that the program all but guarantees an athlete’s path to compete at the sport’s highest level.”
