Zheng Qinwen has pulled out of the upcoming Japan Open in Osaka, continuing her struggle with a persistent shoulder injury following her groundbreaking victory at the China Open. This withdrawal marks her second consecutive tournament exit, having also abandoned the Wuhan Open earlier this week due to physical fatigue. The Chinese sensation’s recent performances have been nothing short of remarkable, but the grueling toll of her schedule now forces a pause in her momentum.

The 2026 China Open saw Zheng deliver one of the most physically demanding runs of the season. Entering as a wild card, she carved her name in history by becoming the first Chinese woman to win the prestigious WTA 1000 event. Her path to the title was an arduous one, battling through four consecutive three-set matches and accumulating a staggering 15 hours and 16 minutes on court over seven matches—the longest time spent by any player at a single tournament this year, according to Opta statistics.

Despite this landmark achievement—the first WTA Tour title for Zheng since 2024—the intense physical exertion has taken its toll. Following Wuhan, Zheng admitted her body was overwhelmed by the relentless schedule that included the US Open, Billie Jean King Cup, and the China Open itself. “Since returning from injury, I have played a demanding stretch of tennis over the past month and a half, competing at the US Open, the Billie Jean King Cup and the China Open. My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches,” Zheng explained in a WTA Tour statement.

Her withdrawal from the Japan Open, scheduled from October 19 to 25, means missing two back-to-back tournaments at a critical moment when she had been building significant momentum. World No. 68 Ashlyn Krueger has taken Zheng’s spot in the main draw, highlighting the sudden void left by the reigning China Open champion.

Zheng’s recent surge has been extraordinary. Since entering the US Open ranked No. 121, she has rocketed up 98 places to No. 23, fueled by a string of 14 wins in her last 15 matches—the sole loss coming against world No. 1 Elena Rybakina. Many of these victories were hard-fought three-set battles, underscoring the physical demands she has endured.

Her China Open run included victories over top opponents such as Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, Elise Mertens in the semifinals, and Mirra Andreeva in the final. Each match was a test of endurance and resilience, with Zheng often clawing back from tough positions. The title not only showcased her talent but also exposed the limits of her current physical condition.

Looking ahead, Zheng remains scheduled to compete at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open next month. However, her participation hinges entirely on her recovery progress from the shoulder injury that has sidelined her twice in quick succession. For now, Zheng’s priority is clear: full rehabilitation and regaining peak fitness before resuming the demanding WTA tour schedule.

Zheng’s story is a striking testament to both her meteoric rise and the brutal physical realities at the elite level. After a historic triumph that required more than 15 hours on court, her immediate challenge is to heal without risking further injury. “My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches,” Zheng acknowledged, encapsulating the delicate balance between ambition and recovery that defines her current journey.
