Bury St Edmunds beaten 42-14 in National League One home fixture against Rosslyn Park

Unforced errors and indiscipline proved costly as Bury St Edmunds suffered a 42-14 home defeat at the hands of Rosslyn Park last weekend.

In the main, the Wolfpack defended well against a side that many have tipped to be battling towards the top end of the National League One standings come the end of the season.

But mistakes at crucial points in the contest proved to be their undoing, and as a result, they have dropped into the relegation/promotion play-off spot ahead of their trip to second-placed Tonbridge Juddians on Saturday (3pm).

Bury repelled visiting Park for the opening 20 minutes, and yet they still headed into the break at the GK IPA Haberden with a 21-0 deficit.

A brace of tries from Charlie Coe and one scored by Jake Cleet – all of which were converted by Rory Jennings – put the away side in a commanding position.

A Connor Byrne try early in the second half extended Park’s lead before Bury got their first points on the board via Matt Hicks, who crashed over from a maul, with Ben Penfold adding the extras.

Later in the half Clark Macfarlane produced a moment of individual brilliance to score a superb converted try that gave the Haberden faithful a crumb of hope, but two tries from replacement scrum-half Ewan Fenley, both of which were converted by the impressive Jennings, ensured that it was ultimately a comfortable afternoon for Park.

This weekend’s opponents, Tonbridge, are second in the table after suffering their first defeat of the campaign on Saturday when they were beaten 35-26 on the road at Birmingham Moseley.
