The Alabama Crimson Tide are facing unfamiliar territory following another disappointing performance against an SEC rival.
No. 6 Alabama suffered a stunning 26-10 loss to No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday at Neyland Stadium, marking the program's second consecutive regular season defeat for the first time since 2007.
The loss comes just one week after Alabama fell to Georgia, raising serious questions about the Crimson Tide's ability to compete for a national championship.
Tennessee dominated defensively, holding Alabama to just 201 total yards while forcing four turnovers.
The Volunteers also recorded five sacks and limited the Crimson Tide to only 54 rushing yards.
Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell struggled against Tennessee's relentless defensive pressure, completing 19 of 29 passes for 147 yards and two interceptions.
Russell provided Alabama's only touchdown with a 19-yard run in the second quarter, but the Crimson Tide failed to find the end zone again. Despite struggling to finish drives in the first half, Tennessee entered halftime with a 12-10 advantage behind four field goals from Cooper Ranvier.
The Volunteers eventually pulled away after halftime.
Running back DeSean Bishop delivered a dominant performance, rushing for 159 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.
His first touchdown extended Tennessee's lead in the third quarter before another scoring run in the fourth put the game out of reach.
Quarterback George MacIntyre also contributed 197 passing yards as Tennessee improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in SEC play.
The victory marked Tennessee's third consecutive home win over Alabama, further establishing Neyland Stadium as a difficult environment for the Crimson Tide. For Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, the result creates additional pressure entering the second half of the season.
The Crimson Tide dropped to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play, leaving little room for additional mistakes in the College Football Playoff race.
Saturday's loss also came during a chaotic weekend across the SEC, with top-ranked Georgia and No. 7 Texas suffering upset defeats.
Tennessee now has an opportunity to climb the national rankings while strengthening its postseason position.
Alabama, meanwhile, must regroup quickly before hosting Texas A&M next weekend.
The Crimson Tide entered October with championship expectations. After two consecutive losses, simply keeping those hopes alive has become a much bigger challenge.
