Skye Nicolson is not giving up on her effort to get a super-fight with Amanda Serrano until all is said and done.
Two-weight world champion Nicolson was particularly aggressive in her push for a title fight with Serrano during her time with the featherweight title. Now she is competing at super-bantamweight, defending her WBC belt against Miyo Yoshida on November 8 in Arlington, Texas.
Nicolson has spent her professional career signed to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, and is now fighting on Most Valuable Promotions as part of a strategic partnership. And with Serrano’s career coming to a close, she may have few opportunities to get the fight of her dreams.
When it comes to women’s boxing, there are three superstars who stand above the pack in terms of their historic relevance and competitive dominance: Ireland’s Katie Taylor, two-time Olympic champion Claressa Shields and Puerto Rican knockout artist Amanda Serrano.
So when Skye Nicolson – a rising name in her own right – picked up interim gold at the end of 2023 and solidified her position a few months later, Serrano’s name was on her lips from the jump. The fight never happened, and with the legend set for a major press conference next week retirement could be looming.

“I’ll keep chasing the fight, but it does start to feel less and less likely,” she admitted in an exclusive chat with Bloody Elbow ahead of her ring return. “Never say never, we stay optimistic, you never know and I haven’t stopped chasing the fight.
“We’ve been very vocal about wanting that fight for years and years now. Obviously, she is coming to the end of her career now so it will be up to her what she does in the next fight or two or three if she has any after the next one.”
Serrano entered her most recent bout with Lucrecia Anabella Manzur as a heavy favorite with plans to smash the women’s boxing knockout record that she currently holds along with fellow icon Christy Martin. However, her performance was subpar, and many felt she might have got away with the decision.
Nicolson insists that she has never had an actual feud with Serrano, and that she just wanted to be able to fight the best women. “She maybe took it personally that I was calling her out or saying she wanted to fight her in interviews,” Nicolson continued.
“I don’t know why it became personal or felt like it was personal because it was part of the sport and I feel like that’s what every fighter wants; to fight the champion in their weight division. That’s all it ever was from me, but it did sometimes feel like they took it personally but I don’t have any bad blood at all.”
