Celtic Facing Unwanted 72-Year Record

Celtic’s trip to Easter Road already looked like a response game after Thursday night’s defeat to Celta Vigo. It now carries the threat of an unwanted 72-year record.

The only wins in that spell have come against Motherwell and Hearts.

All the upcoming Celtic fixtures are on our fixtures page.

Defeat to Hibernian on Sunday would make it six losses in seven matches, something Celtic have not suffered since 1953.

That turns the Hibs game into more than another league fixture.

Celtic have already had enough awkward moments this season, but this run has brought a different kind of pressure. The issue is not simply that they are losing matches. It is how quickly games are turning once momentum shifts away from them.

Mika Baur gave Celtic the lead early in the second half, and Liam Scales then hit the woodwork with a header that could have made it 2-0. Instead, Celta levelled from a free-kick before Javi Rodriguez struck again minutes later from outside the box.

O’Neill admitted after the game that Celtic have to recover quickly before Easter Road.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “We have to recover from it.

“We’re in tomorrow morning. And we’ll try and get ourselves physically right for the game, which is the most important thing.

“I think that psychologically, I don’t think tonight will do us real serious damage.

“One never knows. But it’s a tough schedule for us.

“The last week has been tough travelling to Portugal. But listen, no excuses.

“We are what we are. And we have to try and win.”

Celtic need to stop this run before it becomes a deeper problem. A poor European campaign is already hurting, but domestic form cannot be allowed to get dragged into the same pattern.

That has shown up too often. Celtic can look dangerous when they are on top, but once a game turns against them, they have struggled to slow it down and regain control.

Hibs may be bottom of the table, but Easter Road is not the place to arrive looking fragile.

Sunday is about winning the match. It is also about stopping this run before it moves any closer to a marker Celtic should be nowhere near.
