‘Not the Answer,’ ‘Never Believed in Him’ — 2-Time Super Bowl Champion Gets Brutally Honest About ‘Little Man’ Kyler Murray’s Fit With Vikings

Six wins, zero losses, and LeSean McCoy still wants to know what everyone is celebrating about Kyler Murray. The Minnesota Vikings’ perfect record has done nothing to convince the two-time Super Bowl champion that their quarterback is the right fit.

With the Detroit Lions waiting Sunday, McCoy expects Minnesota’s offense to face a question its defense has helped postpone. What happens when Murray has to keep up on the scoreboard?

LeSean McCoy Says Kyler Murray Is ‘Not the Answer’

During “Speakeasy,” McCoy pushed back on optimism that Minnesota could exploit Detroit’s defense. His concern was how much credit Murray deserved for the Vikings’ unbeaten start.

“You want to give quarterbacks all these credit for wins? Is he the reason why they winning these games?” McCoy asked.

The discussion quickly turned to Minnesota’s defense, which has allowed 74 points across six games. Since surrendering 22 in the opener, the Vikings have held every opponent to 16 or fewer. Their most recent victory was a 16-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

McCoy saw that support as essential to understanding Murray’s season. He dismissed the quarterback as a “little man” before delivering his verdict.

“He’s not the answer though,” McCoy said.

Murray’s numbers give critics plenty to work with. Entering Week 8, he ranks No. 27 in PFN’s NFL QB Impact rankings with a 68.2 grade. Across five appearances, he has thrown for 812 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 66.4% of his passes.

Minnesota’s record includes a game Murray missed, with Carson Wentz starting the Week 2 win over the Chicago Bears. Murray has also contributed 132 rushing yards, but the passing production has left questions about the offense’s ceiling.

McCoy briefly framed the situation as a collective miscalculation before stopping himself.

“We all thought that this Vikings team will be super different if Kyler Murray was the quarterback. Well, can we all say we were wrong?” he said. “Can you all say y’all was wrong? I never believed him.”

McCoy was pointing back to his earlier position on Minnesota’s quarterback decision, making clear that six wins had not changed his mind.

Justin Jefferson’s Role Fuels McCoy’s Concern Before Lions Matchup

McCoy’s argument also centered on Justin Jefferson. He rejected the idea that winning automatically satisfies an elite receiver whose target volume has fallen from 8.3 per game in 2025 to 6.2 through five appearances this season.

“He does care about getting stats. We all do. That’s why we play the game,” McCoy said.

Jefferson had 23 catches for 302 yards and three touchdowns through five appearances, including four receptions for 44 yards against Indianapolis. Those totals have already promptedscrutiny of Minnesota’s passing game and whether it is getting enough from its best receiving threat.

McCoy argued that a player with Jefferson’s résumé should remain central to the offense. He questioned how long Minnesota could keep winning while leaving that much potential production unused.

“I do think that this week they get exposed,” he said. “I think the Lions put some points up, right? And I think that the Vikings won’t be able to put points up. I truly believe that.”

Detroit presents a meaningful test for that prediction. Jared Goff enters the matchup with 14 touchdown passes and no interceptions across six games, placing him eighth in the same PFN’s NFL QB Impact rankings with an 83.2 grade.

The Vikings visit Ford Field on Nov. 1 with a chance to reach 7-0. Their defense has repeatedly made modest scoring totals enough. McCoy is betting that arrangement becomes uncomfortable against Detroit, where Murray may need to supply more than another tidy entry in the win column.
