Tottenham 1-2 Arsenal: North London Stays Red
Arsenal Women in 2019

Arsenal end their five game streak of no consecutive wins with a victorious 2-1 win over their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.

Renée Slegers will be happy with her side for seeing out the game and forcing the win in their favour. Despite it not being the most confident or convincing wins for the Gunners, they saw it out until the end which is something that they have struggled to do throughout the latest season.

Arsenal went behind before 15 minutes through a Cathinka Tandberg goal but instead of slowing down and realising they were 'down and out', the Gunners forced their way up the field in attack and got rewarded with an equaliser just four minutes later.

Georgia Stanway took a first time hit on the edge of the box after a brilliant pass back from Alessia Russo, the ball soaring through the air and bouncing into the net from the crossbar and restoring faith that the fans had in the Gunners on the pitch.

Both teams went into half-time with the 1-1 score line and before Arsenal came out hungry for a second.

The Gunners were awarded a penalty just before the hour mark in the game after a hand ball from a corner by Tottenham defender Ella Morris, though a harsh decision after a failed clearance attempt from a Lisa Baum effort.

Calmly and coolly, Russo deceived Tottenham goalkeeper Lize Kop and slotted the ball into the bottom left-hand corner for the Gunners before running towards the away fans at the corner flag and celebrating with the loud and proud Arsenal fans who had made the trip to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Slegers' side jump up to sixth place in the league after the win and look to continue that form heading into their UEFA Women's Champions League campaign on Wednesday against Portuguese side Benfica -- playing like the confident Arsenal that every club and fan knows they can be.

Arsenal Player Ratings

Misa Rodriguez - 7

Despite conceding the goal to Tandberg in the opening 15 minutes of the game, Misa Rodríguez made no other mistakes in the Arsenal net and defended it with honour and someone who understands the importance of securing the three points in a derby game.

Misa also made a perfect save to keep the score in favour of Arsenal in the second half, jumping up and pushing away the strike from Shakiera Martinez and will be a save that the Arsenal fans talk about with awe online.

Emily Fox - 6

Emily Fox started at right back for Arsenal and was strong in defence like she usually was. Calm and collected, there is nothing ever bad about Fox's game that can be commented on. The American defender is very consistent in her game and it shows week in, week out.

Leah Williamson - 7

Leading Arsenal out as captain in the North London derby, Leah Williamson did not put a foot wrong in the game. Under scrutiny over the past few weeks, Williamson played with the confidence of someone who knew what they were doing at the back and it showed on the pitch.

Williamson looked like she was the player at the start of the season, enjoying the win when the full time whistle went as she ran towards the away fans and celebrated with the travelling cohort in North London.

Steph Catley - 6

Steph Catley comes back into the Arsenal line up, replacing Lotte Wubben-Moy after being out with a back injury over the past few games and easily showed why she works so well with Williamson.

Catley could have been better but since she is newly back from the injury that took her out of games she worked well with defending the Arsenal net from an aggressive Tottenham press.

Taylor Hinds - 8

Taylor Hinds gets her first Arsenal Women's Super League start this season and made no mistakes. Playing at left-back, Hinds showed why she has a shoe in for the position as a natural left-back over playing a right back there.

Hinds collaborated up and down the left hand side with Caitlin Foord and continuously denied Tottenham the chance to find a second goal in the game.

Not playing Hinds in the left-back position in further games would be utterly careless by Slegers as Arsenal played much better with Hinds there.

Kyra Cooney-Cross - 7

Arsenal's player of the month Kyra Cooney-Cross held it down in midfield once again, working in sync with Stanway beside her. Though they struggled in possession sometimes, Cooney-Cross never stopped trying to win the ball back and progress Arsenal further up the field.

Georgia Stanway - 7

Stanway scored Arsenal equalising goal with a first time strike and got her first goal in red and white in the Women's Super League. Holding down the midfield with Cooney-Cross, Stanway showed why she walked into the Arsenal midfield over the summer with her aggressive nature on the ball.

Lisa Baum - 7

Unlucky not to get a goal in the derby game, Lisa Baum still showed she had a lot to prove with how she ran at the Tottenham defence.

The 19-year-old helped Arsenal win the penalty that led to them winning the game, and helped to push Arsenal further up the pitch in attack in the second half of the game.

Olivia Smith - 7

Olivia Smith started in back-to-back games for Arsenal and continuously drove towards the net whether centrally or out wide for the Gunners in an attempt to bolster the lead.

Smith is however continuously targeted throughout games with rare repercussions for the opponents who bring her down, so the Canadian was double and triple marked whenever she tried to advance up the pitch.

Caitlin Foord - 9 (POTM)

Foord had one of her best games in months in an Arsenal shirt in the North London derby, starting on the wing with her expertise in driving forward. Foord plays a really transitional game with physical duels, and the North London derby brought out the best of the Australian winger.

Foord did everything right in the game, advancing when needing to and tracking back to defend the Arsenal net with vigour -- hopefully renewing the confidence in herself to show off and be the best version of herself going forward.

Alessia Russo - 7

Russo gets back on the score sheet after missing out in the weekend game against Birmingham City after a run of games where she scored in each of them. Not only did Russo get on the score sheet with the penalty, she assisted the equalising goal for Stanway showing just how versatile she is while playing the number 10.

Substitutes

Ona Batlle - 7

Finally playing on the right for Arsenal as right back when replacing Fox, Ona Batlle had a much better game in red and white in her preferred position. The Spanish defender would help drive forward down the right hand side, and though Arsenal scored no more goals after she came on, she helped to increase the chances of getting another.

Élisa de Almeida - 6

Élisa de Almeida replaced Catley at left centre back and had a solid game in an Arsenal shirt. She defended when she needed to, and made no mistakes.

Smilla Holmberg - 6

Smilla Holmberg replaced Baum out on the wing, and in her short ten minute cameo for Arsenal in the derby showed her versatility in being able to play both right wing and right back as she defended and attacked for Arsenal.

Stina Blackstenius - 6

Stina Blackstenius replaced Smith in the number 9 position for Arsenal in her short ten minutes on the pitch and had the opportunity to seal the win even more for the Gunners but ultimately failed to convert the shot. However, Blackstenius did not do anything wrong during the game, just a lack of decisive decision making from the Swede brings the rating down.
