Manchester United have endured a remarkable run of red card drama, with disciplinary incidents overshadowing two consecutive matches during a disastrous start to the season.
Michael Carrick’s side have struggled for consistency, winning just twice in nine competitive fixtures.
Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Tottenham Hotspur offered an opportunity to turn things around, particularly after Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 73rd minute.
Just five minutes later, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a straight red card following an altercation with Luke Shaw.
However, United somehow failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage against a side that arrived at Old Trafford bottom of the Premier League.
Dominic Solanke equalised in stoppage time, securing an embarrassing 1-1 draw for the visitors.
United’s disciplinary frustrations continued against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, although this time Carrick’s side were responsible.
Leny Yoro was dismissed in the 74th minute following a VAR review for denying Jonathan David a goalscoring opportunity.
Ademola Lookman subsequently doubled Atletico’s advantage, condemning United to a 2-0 Champions League defeat.
Now, another Manchester United midfielder has suffered an additional setback following a red card incident.
Manchester United loanee Jacob Devaney sustained an injury during the incident that resulted in his dismissal for Hibernian against Dundee United last weekend.
The 19-year-old was sent off shortly after coming on as a substitute during Hibernian’s 1-0 defeat.
As Centre Devils previously reported, Devaney’s initial yellow card was upgraded to a straight red following a VAR review.
Now, according to the Edinburgh Evening News, Hibernian manager Marink Reedijk has confirmed the midfielder was also injured during the incident.
“Nathan Lowe got an injury from the last match. The same counts for Devaney, he got an injury through this red card, unfortunate one,” Reedijk explained.
Discussing the expected recovery period, he added: “Nathan and Devaney are mid-term I think. I’m not a doctor so it’s around a few weeks I think.”
Devaney joined Hibernian on a season-long loan in August, with an option to make the move permanent.
His injury now threatens to interrupt his development further, with the midfielder facing several weeks on the sidelines alongside his suspension.
