Rangers were forced to settle for a frustrating 2-2 draw against Dundee at Dens Park on Saturday, and outspoken STV presenter Ewen Cameron has now turned on Derek McInnes after spotting a “massive error” in the manager’s second-half game management.
McInnes has faced mounting questions from the Ibrox faithful over his tactical calls during the stalemate at Dens Park. With Rangers looking to snatch a win, the manager opted for a 76th-minute double change, hooking Badredine Bouanani, who had been outstanding on the right flank, alongside Minsu Kim, while leaving Ryan Naderi and Djeidi Gassama on the pitch.
Speaking on the latest episode of the STV Radio Football Show, Cameron admitted that while he initially viewed McInnes as the “signing of the season” who could tilt the title race, the manager’s late-game management completely derailed their momentum.
Giving his unfiltered verdict on the broadcast, Cameron did not hold back on where the blame lay for the dropped points. The broadcaster described McInnes’ decision to replace Bouanani, as well as Minsu, as a “massive error”, while also pointing out how Naderi had an “awful” outing.
He said: “I’m going to be critical of Derek McInnes. I respect Derek McInnes for what he did at Hearts last season. I thought he was a really good appointment for Rangers, and I said at the start of the campaign that I thought Derek McInnes was the signing of the season.
“I thought that he would win Rangers the league after going so close with Hearts, but he made a massive error in that second half. Massive error removing Bouanani, who was outstanding on the right, and Minsu Kim, who was supporting Naderi. I thought Naderi was awful. He is never a player who plays on his own up top.”
For Rangers supporters, hearing Cameron pick apart the team’s tactical shape carries an undeniable layer of irony. The STV host became an infamous figure among the Ibrox support earlier this year when McInnes traded Tynecastle for Glasgow just months after guiding Hearts to the brink of the Scottish Premiership title – a move that famously provoked fierce on-air arguments and even a dramatic walk-off by Cameron from the studio alongside co-hosts Ronnie Charters and Callum Bell.
Cameron’s assessment directly echoes the heated debate currently dominating online fan forums. Supporters have been left scratching their heads over the withdrawal of Bouanani and Minsu, which left Naderi entirely isolated as a lone focal point – a role critics argue does not suit his style of play.
With momentum stuttering at Dundee, McInnes will need his tactical calls to hit the mark when Rangers return to action, as even his former admirers in the media begin highlighting avoidable cracks in the title push.
