Dan Hurley signs two-year contract extension with UConn basketball through 2032

Three days before his team's first game of the 2026-27 season, UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley signed a two-year contract extension with the school, the university announced on Friday, Oct. 30.

With the extension, his deal with the Huskies now runs through the 2031-32 season. Details of the extension weren't immediately available.

Hurley has become arguably the best coach in the sport, having rebuilt UConn back into a national juggernaut after inheriting a program that went 30-35 in the two seasons before he was hired.

Under Hurley's watch, the Huskies won national championships in 2023 and 2024, and have appeared in the Final Four in three of the past four seasons. Last season, they advanced to the national championship game, where they lost to Michigan. At 53 years old, he's the youngest active head coach to have reached three national title games and his 11-1 record in the Sweet 16 or later is the best mark of any coach in NCAA tournament history.

In eight seasons at UConn, Hurley's teams are 199-75, including a 126-28 mark over the past four seasons.

"Dan has proven to be the very best coach in men’s college basketball, and we’re thrilled to keep him home at UConn for the next six years," UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement announcing the extension. "His teams embody everything that UConn is about; resilience, competitive excellence and the pursuit of championships. In this chaotic era of college sports, it has never been more important to maintain continuity as we strive to compete at the highest level in everything we do."

It's the latest financial and contractual commitment the school has made to its star coach.

In 2024, shortly after turning down an opportunity to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, he signed a new six-year, $50 million contract with the Huskies. At $8.03 million, he was the second-highest-paid coach in men's college basketball, behind only Kansas' Bill Self, according to the USA TODAY coaches database.

With a roster headlined by returning guards Braylon Mullins and Silas Demary Jr., UConn heads into the 2026-27 season at No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

"It’s an incredible honor to coach the game I love at a place like the University of Connecticut and to be part of a community that means so much to me and my family," Hurley said in a statement. "We understand our responsibility to the people of Connecticut and to the incredible supporters of UConn Basketball and will continue to bring a relentless, obsessive approach to winning and championship-level success."
