Bucs blitz heavy defense faces dangerous Bryce Young pressure numbers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers built their defensive identity around pressure, but that approach could backfire Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Bryce Young has developed into one of the NFL’s most productive passers, and his numbers against the blitz suggest Todd Bowles will need more than his usual aggression to slow him down.

Tampa Bay blitzes on 43.8% of opposing passing plays, the third-highest rate in the league. Young, however, has thrown for 593 yards against the blitz, averaging 8.9 yards per attempt without an interception. Those numbers force a tough decision for Bowles: keep sending extra rushers and risk giving Young favorable opportunities, or rely more on coverage to make him earn every completion. Tampa Bay plays zone coverage on 79.7% of passing plays, and Carolina has two receivers equipped to exploit that tendency. Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker both rank among the league’s top 10 in yards per route against zone coverage. McMillan has also recorded 13 explosive receptions against zone, while Coker owns a 32.9% target rate against it. If the Buccaneers repeatedly give Young those matchups, the Panthers could move the ball without needing to win consistently against tight man coverage.

Tampa Bay cannot simply abandon pressure, either. Young has taken 12 sacks through five games, giving the Buccaneers a reason to attack him if their rushers can get home. The distinction is whether Tampa Bay can generate pressure without leaving obvious openings behind it. Disguised looks, disciplined rush lanes and sound tackling will matter as much as the number of blitzes called. The Buccaneers also need their offense to provide support. Baker Mayfield is expected to return after missing three games with a dislocated throwing-hand thumb, but Emeka Egbuka has been ruled out. Egbuka accounted for 43% of Tampa Bay’s wide receiver targets through six games, leaving Chris Godwin and the rest of the receiving corps with added responsibility. Bowles’ pressure scheme can still disrupt an offense, but Sunday requires the right kind of aggression. Against a quarterback thriving against the blitz and receivers producing against zone, Tampa Bay must make adjustments before its greatest defensive strength becomes Carolina’s clearest advantage.
