How big will Chelsea’s new stadium be? Capacity plans revealed amid Stamford Bridge move talk

Chelsea face a difficult decision over the future of Stamford Bridge as they look to close the financial gap on their Premier League rivals. The club’s current home is steeped in history, but its limited capacity makes it harder to generate the income available to teams with larger stadiums.

Chelsea brought in £87 million in matchday revenue during the 2024-25 season, compared to Tottenham’s £126 million. Spurs can also host up to 30 non-football events at full capacity, including NFL games and concerts, helping them generate £277 million in commercial revenue, while the Blues generated £200.9 million.

Moving to a bigger stadium could help Chelsea narrow that gap, but finding a suitable solution is far from straightforward. The Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO), established in 1993, own the freehold of Stamford Bridge. Under the agreement, at least 75 per cent of CPO shareholders must approve a move for Chelsea to leave the site and retain the club’s name.

How big could Chelsea’s new stadium be?

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea believe they need a stadium with a capacity of more than 70,000 supporters. They view the project as a 50-year investment that could boost matchday income and create more opportunities to host major events.

Any project remains a long-term prospect, with the club needing a plan that is logistically and economically feasible. It is anticipated that a new stadium would take around eight years to build, from planning to completion.

Chelsea could instead demolish Stamford Bridge and rebuild on the existing site, although this would bring significant challenges. Their previous plans for Earl’s Court included a stadium and multi-purpose arena, but neither progressed.

Pat Nevin shares his thoughts on Chelsea leaving Stamford Bridge

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin understands the emotional difficulty of leaving a historic ground, having experienced Everton’s move from Goodison Park to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

“It was heartbreaking to leave Goodison Park, which I deeply loved,” he said. “But I travel around going to football games for my job, and one by one you see Arsenal move, Spurs in a new stadium, and so you come to accept that change must happen. It’s just what that change looks like and what’s best for the club.”

Nevin acknowledged that Chelsea may need to consider a move but stopped short of explicitly supporting one. He also stressed the importance of the CPO in protecting the club’s identity and preventing owners from relocating Chelsea for financial gain.

He continued: “The CPO is vitally important because it basically ensures that an owner can’t come in, move the club, make an absolute fortune and then b—-r off. It was hard to imagine Chelsea without Roman Abramovich for a long time, but then he had to go. Then the next ones were Boehly and Clearlake, and you think they are forever, and now Boehly’s already gone. That shows the enduring value of the CPO.”

The Blues legend confirmed he would use his CPO vote if a proposal to leave Stamford Bridge were made, describing it as “something I have often thought about and really studied”.
