Conor Coady has announced his retirement from professional football just a few months after landing a role in the England youth coaching set-up. The 33-year-old was last contracted to Championship club Wrexham, but the two parties mutually agreed to part ways on August 31.

In the immediate aftermath of his departure, Coady began working at Liverpool's academy, but that stint lasted just a few days. He officially joined Lee Carsley's under-21s coaching team on September 4.

Coady has since decided to focus entirely on his new position, confirming his retirement in an Instagram video on Friday morning. The announcement was made minutes before Thomas Tuchel confirmed his England senior men's squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Croatia and Spain.

He said: "So where do I start? From being a young boy at Rainford Rangers, to living every young lad's dream and playing at the highest level. Eight clubs, 503 appearances, two promotions, a World Cup and a Euros. Ten England caps.

"Football is my life. It always has been. But everything at some point always comes to an end. I never, ever thought playing for Wolves in Europe or going with England to a World Cup this day would come.

"But honestly, the last couple of years have been tough. Not playing as much as I would have liked I have struggled with, as I live for playing footie."

Coady went on to pay tribute to boyhood club Liverpool, Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Wolves, Everton, Leicester City, Wrexham and Charlton. He also included a special mention for his family and agent.

Having been a recognisable name in English football for many years - including appearances at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup for his country - numerous high-profile names paid tribute to his impressive career.

Everton star Jack Grealish replied: "Nearly got me going (crying emoji) unbelievable career and what a human! Enjoy retirement, brother." Manchester United defender Harry Maguire commented: "Top career mate, pleasure to be a small part of it." Raheem Sterling later added: "My captain."

Numerous players that Coady spent time with at Molineux also issued lengthy messages, including Raul Jimenez, Daniel Podence and Nelson Semedo.

Kieran Trippier, who now plays for Coady's former club Wolves, said: "All the best my bro" whilst Reece James put a heart emoji underneath his emotional social media post.

Coady did not get the chance to play under current England manager Tuchel, but he did feature under Gareth Southgate. The ex-Three Lions boss was a big fan of his and that was further evidenced by his words in the Instagram post.

Southgate wrote: "A lovely summary. Met you at that dinner in Bolton when you were 16 with your Mum and Dad. You've had a fabulous career and you should all be proud."
