Bournemouth’s squad depth good enough to win silverware, says Cook
Bournemouth’s squad depth good enough to win silverware, says Cook

Lewis Cook believes the quality within Bournemouth's ranks can help them win silverware this season after the Cherries reached the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Bournemouth made it five wins from five in all competitions with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, with Amine Adli, Cook and Alvaro Rodriguez all on target at the Vitality Stadium.

The Cherries had been eliminated in each of their last four EFL Cup matches against fellow Premier League sides, but set up a tie at Anfield against Liverpool in the last eight.

After a difficult start to the season, Bournemouth have impressed of late, producing superb victories over AC Milan in the Europa League and Manchester United last time out.

Bournemouth became the third team to go seven Premier League games unbeaten against Man Utd (W3 D4), along with Chelsea (eight between May 2013 and October 2016) and Liverpool (eight between December 2018 and April 2022) after their victory at Old Trafford.

Marco Rose made eight changes to the side that beat the Red Devils, and Cook believes that strength in depth will be crucial in competing across all fronts this season.

"I think it says a lot that we've done it in style with eight changes," Cook said. "The squad is really important and everyone is right behind what we're doing.

"I look at our squad, and we've got a great team, a great squad and a great club with high ambitions. There's still a long way to go, but our aim is to try and win silverware."

Bournemouth will be hoping to maintain their momentum against Leeds United on Saturday, with Rose urging his team to continue working hard.

"We felt after Chelsea that we had to start better, especially if you talk about good early starts by the opponents," Rose added.

"Now we have changed momentum, now we are a team that starts well, and we have to keep it.

"It feels at the moment that we are in a flow, but it is hard work, that's what we have to know, and we have to continue the hard work to stay in it."

For Villa, meanwhile, they saw their four-game winning run across all competitions come to an end, while also suffering a rare defeat against Bournemouth.

The Villans had not lost any of their last seven games against Bournemouth before Wednesday (W4 D3), with this their first defeat against them since the 2022-23 season.

Unai Emery, however, was quick to turn his attention to the Premier League, saying his team will keep moving forward in their quest to climb the table.

"We are disappointed," Emery said. "Since I arrived at Aston Villa we've played here four times, and we have won, we have drawn, and we lost, but we played the same match like we played before.

"Here, you must be compact, you must avoid the chances they were creating. We needed the 'keeper, we needed the defence being compact, like we are building this team.

"And then when we were attacking, because we were creating chances even more than other times we were playing here, and we weren't clinical.

"We have Fulham on Saturday, and the Premier League is the priority. Then we have the Champions League and FA Cup. The EFL Cup was a competition for a trophy and that we were excited and motivated to get something.

"Now we're out and we say thank you to the supporters who were here with us, helping us, travelling from Birmingham to be with us. Thank you, and now we keep going forward."
