Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy left Sunday’s Week 9 game in Philadelphia with a hip injury, but returned after backup Jameis Winston’s touchdown pass put New York ahead of the Eagles.

Eagles linebacker Zack Baun struck McCarthy after the quarterback gained three yards on a run, with 12:02 remaining in the third quarter. McCarthy got up slowly and left during New York’s opening series after halftime.

On the quarterback keeper, Baun led with his helmet and made contact with McCarthy’s side, hitting him in the lower abdomen, CBS Sports reported. The Giants had scored six points before McCarthy’s exit. Baun left, too, after injuring his back on the play.

McCarthy tried to throw on the sideline, but grabbed his side and fell to the turf in pain as medical staff came to his aid. He underwent an evaluation in the sideline medical tent before going to the locker room for further checks.

The Giants listed McCarthy as questionable to return. The severity of his injury was not immediately known.

Winston replaced McCarthy after starting four games this season in place of the injured Jaxson Dart. On the ensuing drive, his longest play was a 27-yard completion to wide receiver Darnell Mooney.

Winston capped the drive by finding tight end Isaiah Likely for the Giants’ first touchdown of the afternoon, giving New York a 13-8 lead with 2:25 left in the third quarter. In relief, Winston completed six of eight passes for 71 yards.

McCarthy soon returned to action. The Giants forced an Eagles punt, and he came back for the final play before the fourth quarter on New York’s next possession.

He sprinted from the tunnel, ran to the bench and made several warmup throws before returning, NorthJersey.com reported in an article published by Yahoo Sports.

McCarthy had completed nine of 13 passes for 101 yards before he was injured. The Eagles sacked him five times.

Sunday marked McCarthy’s second Giants start of the season and his second consecutive start. New York traded for him after Dart’s Week 2 knee injury, acquiring him from the Minnesota Vikings.

It was not immediately known whether McCarthy finished the game.

Baun returned to the Eagles’ sideline, but he had not re-entered the game when New York held a 13-8 lead in the fourth quarter, NBC Sports’ ProFootballTalk reported.
