King’s Lynn boss pulls no punches after midweek collapse against Worksop Town in National League North

Paul Caddis branded King’s Lynn Town’s 5-0 midweek humiliation at Worksop Town as embarrassing after watching his side’s five-match unbeaten run come to a crushing end.

The Linnets boss didn't mince words in his assessment of a chastening night in National League North, admitting his players were physically dominated in a performance that left him seething.

Having conceded just once in their previous five league outings, Lynn shipped five goals in a spectacular defensive collapse that Caddis admitted he simply hadn’t seen coming.

“Embarrassing. It was embarrassing,” he admitted.

“After the first 10 or 15 minutes, I thought we got beat up physically. That’s not taking anything away from Worksop. They fully deserved everything they got.

“They were better than us in all departments. They were physically dominant and picked up almost every first contact. If they didn’t, they certainly picked up the second contact.

“It was a real humbling experience for us and something I didn’t see coming.

“We’d conceded just one goal in our previous five league games, so to see that tonight was something I really didn’t expect.”

Caddis added: “For the first 10 minutes, I think they touched the ball very few times. We wanted to take the sting out of the game, which we did,” he explained.

“The five goals came from our errors. Again, that’s not taking anything away from Worksop. I’ll reiterate that they fully deserved it, and they took advantage of our mistakes.

“For the first goal, we switched off at the back post. For the second, we didn’t go and meet the ball.

“The third was a clear foul, which changed the dynamic of the game. The fourth was headed in from two yards out, and for the fifth, we switched off at the back post again.”

While clearly furious with the manner of the defeat, Caddis was quick to shoulder responsibility rather than publicly single out his players.

“It was a really poor, poor performance and something I didn’t expect from that group,” he said.

“But I’m the leader of that group, so it’s well and truly on me.

“The one thing I won’t do is come out and absolutely batter individuals. We deal with those things internally.

“We’re disappointed as a group, and we’ll do everything we possibly can to correct it.”

With a tough league fixture at Hereford looming on Saturday, Lynn will have little time to dwell on a defeat that brought their recent resurgence to an abrupt halt.

The players are due to return to training this morning as Caddis looks to address the shortcomings exposed by Worksop.

“We’ll be back in tomorrow morning and we’ll go through the footage from start to finish,” he said.

“It’s a really difficult one because we haven’t been making those errors.

“As I said, we’d conceded just one goal in the previous five games before tonight. Those errors weren’t there.

“But the errors weren’t the biggest difference tonight. I think we just got physically beaten up.

“That might be on me in terms of team selection and how we went about things.”

Despite the setback, Caddis insisted they wouldn't abandon the approach that helped his side put together their recent unbeaten run.

“We have an identity that has brought us relatively decent success compared to where we’ve been,” he said.

“We have to pick ourselves up. We really do. We’re disappointed, but disappointed is an understatement. We’re absolutely embarrassed.

“We’re frustrated. We’re seething. Of course I am, and the players are too. It’s something we have to correct really quickly.”
