Chris Sutton has backed the Green Brigade’s decision to boycott Thursday’s Europa League match against Celta Vigo, insisting supporters have grounds to feel frustrated with Celtic’s European ambitions.
Martin O’Neill’s side head into the encounter without a point from their opening two matches, leaving them badly needing a result to kick-start their qualification hopes.
But they will attempt to get those first points without the backing of some of Parkhead’s most vocal supporters.

The Green Brigade announced their withdrawal from European and Scottish Cup matches amid their ongoing dispute with the board.
And Sutton believes Sunday’s 7-1 demolition of Hearts should not distract from the issues behind that decision.
Speaking to Record Sport, the former Celtic striker said:
“It’s only been a few days since they were turned over by Benfica. Martin O’Neill tried to put on a brave face but Celtic were thoroughly outclassed.
“Sunday’s win was much more like it but supporters have been crying out for European success, and they have not been properly equipped to compete at the Europa level never mind the Champions League.
“Boycotting big matches like this is a drastic measure but I can understand how they see this might be a way to get the message across.”
There is a distinction between enjoying a strong Celtic performance and being satisfied with the club’s wider direction.
Sunday was a welcome reminder of what this team can produce domestically, but it does not erase the European and domestic defeats that preceded it.
O’Neill must now find a way to carry that attacking confidence into Thursday, with Celtic’s hopes of progressing already under pressure. And he’ll need to do so without the backing of the most vocal corner in Parkhead.
