‘They’re Going To Want Mike Tomlin’ — Ex-NFL QB Speculates on Cowboys Pursuing Legendary HC While Raising Doubts About Dak Prescott

After dropping their third game in the past four matchups, the losses are starting to pile up for the 3-5 Dallas Cowboys. With team owner Jerry Jones always setting playoff expectations, head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s seat may be warming up.

Yet, if the Cowboys do move on from coach Schottenheimer, who would take over? Some are already pointing to Mike Tomlin, who’s now acting as an NFL analyst with NBC Sports.

Meanwhile, others are questioning how long the team will stick by franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who’s only under contract through 2028. Add it all up, and there could be some sizable changes coming to the Cowboys before the 2027 season kicks off.

Dallas Cowboys Ready to Ditch Dak Prescott and Hire Mike Tomlin?

The Cowboys have shown they’re not afraid to mix things up when things get stagnant. Yet, Prescott is now in his 11th season as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback.

However, after leading the team to just a 2-5 record in the postseason, some feel like the Cowboys could do better than what the four-time Pro Bowler has offered.

In fact, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms suggested during Monday’s edition of “PFT Live” that Prescott’s days in Dallas could be numbered. Perhaps just as interesting was Simms offering Tomlin as an eventual replacement for coach Schottenheimer, too.

“They’re going to want Mike Tomlin,” Simms said. “The future of Dak, for what they’re paying Dak. Dak is not one of the top quarterbacks in football. That’s not even debatable. Of course, he’s got some of the best support around him. You could get in this convo of where Dak stacks up. We know, just with our eye, with what we see, he’s not up there with the Mount Rushmore guys or the few other guys that are right after that.”

Prescott’s 79.6 PFN Impact Score ranks 12th among NFL quarterbacks this season. Meanwhile, Prescott’s contract average of $60 million per season ranks second in the entire NFL, only behind three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes.

“He just doesn’t throw the ball to the capability of some of the other top quarterbacks in the sport,” Simms argued. “He doesn’t have a scrambling running effect either. So, wait, 2026? Highest-paid quarterbacks in football? That is somewhere where you need to thrive, and it’s not there right now.

“So I could see them having some misgivings about Dak Prescott and seeing where this year goes, and then maybe it’s time to do something at quarterback in Dallas. If it continues down this path, I think that will happen.”

That’s a fairly bold prediction, suggesting the Cowboys could move on from Prescott in the near future. Yet, the 33-year-old hasn’t been able to end up in the victory column often enough, and those struggles could be weighing on the Cowboys’ front office.

If the Cowboys, who are currently on track to miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season, can’t get on a roll, then anything is possible, potentially even moving on from their franchise quarterback before the 2027 season kicks off.

And who knows? Maybe by then the Cowboys will have a different head coach, such as Tomlin, too.
