Arsenal reportedly ‘fear’ that Barcelona could once again stand in their way of signing Julian Alvarez next year after a crucial development in the Atletico Madrid star’s future.
Article continues under the videoThe Gunners were keen on signing Alvarez during the summer but the forward snubbed their interest in the hopes of securing a move to Barcelona – a deal that never progressed due to the tension between the Catalans and Atletico.
Alvarez eventually remained with Atletico but the 26-year-old has struggled to shake off the events of the summer, having yet to start in La Liga or score in six appearances across all competitions.
Atletico are willing to sell Alvarez to any team aside from Barcelona, however the Argentine international is close to making a move that would ‘tip the scales’ towards a move to the Camp Nou, according to SPORT.
Alvarez recently decided to end his professional relationship with his agent Fernando Hidalgo, who has been with him since the age of 15, and the player is now believed to be ready to name Pablo Barquero as his new representative.
Crucially, Barquero only has two clients on his books including Rodri, Alvarez’s former Manchester City teammate who secured a lucrative move to Barcelona during the summer and giving evidence to the Atletico Madrid star’s intentions over his future.
Recent reports had suggested that Alvarez would consider a move to Arsenal in order to leave Atletico, having previously reiterated he had no desire to return to England or join a club other than Barcelona.
While Arsenal are not giving up hope of signing Alvarez, the player’s decision to go with Barquero is a conscious choice to align with an agent who has strong ties to Barcelona and maintains a good relationship with the club after the Rodri deal.
Arsenal’s only saving grace could be Barcelona, whose interest may have cooled in Alvarez after Atletico’s insistence that they will not entertain talks over a transfer and, with Hansi Flick’s side having a perfect start to the season, there is no immediate urge to try and sign the forward at this time.
