Australia Women began their campaign in the T20I series with a hard-fought two-wicket victory over New Zealand Women at North Sydney Oval. Chasing a target of 163, the hosts held their nerve to reach 165/8 in 18.5 overs, overcoming a spirited bowling performance from the visitors. Georgia Plimmer was named Player of the Match for her impressive knock of 85 runs, although her efforts ultimately ended on the losing side.

Georgia Plimmer and Maddy Green power New Zealand to a respectable total

After Australia Women elected to bowl first, New Zealand Women made a steady start to their innings. Plimmer anchored the batting effort with an excellent 85 off 68 deliveries, striking 10 fours and one six. She displayed patience throughout her innings, rotating the strike effectively while punishing loose deliveries to keep the scoreboard moving.

Flora Devonshire, however, could not make a significant contribution, scoring just one run off four balls before departing early. Amelia Kerr subsequently added nine runs from 12 deliveries, but New Zealand continued to build their innings through Plimmer’s consistency. Maddy Green provided the perfect support in the latter stages, scoring 56 off 37 balls. Her innings included six fours and one six, helping New Zealand maintain momentum and finish with a competitive total of 162/2 in their allotted 20 overs.

Australia’s bowling attack managed to restrict the scoring at different stages, with Kim Garth and Annabel Sutherland claiming one wicket apiece. Garth finished with figures of 1/34 from four overs, while Sutherland conceded 28 runs in her four-over spell. Sophie Molineux and Georgia Wareham also delivered economical spells, conceding 25 runs each.

Ellyse Perry leads Australia’s chase with a crucial fifty

Australia Women needed 163 runs to secure victory, but their chase began disastrously as Georgia Voll was dismissed for a duck after facing just two deliveries. Beth Mooney steadied the innings with an attacking 38 off 25 balls, hitting six boundaries to keep Australia in the contest. Ellyse Perry then produced a decisive contribution, scoring 52 from 30 deliveries. Her innings featured nine fours and provided Australia with the momentum required to stay ahead of the asking rate. Perry’s fluent stroke play put pressure on the New Zealand bowlers and strengthened the hosts’ position during the chase.

Ashleigh Gardner added 23 off 17 balls, including a four and a six, while Georgia Wareham contributed 10 from seven deliveries. Annabel Sutherland scored nine off five balls, but Australia’s middle and lower order struggled to maintain stability as wickets continued to fall. New Zealand found an opportunity to turn the contest around through Jess Kerr, who delivered an outstanding spell of 3/25 in four overs. Rosemary Mair claimed one wicket for 34 runs, while Kerr and Bree Illing also picked up a wicket each. Amelia conceded 50 runs in her four overs, but the wickets kept New Zealand within striking distance.

Australia hold their nerve to seal two-wicket victory

Despite losing eight wickets, Australia Women managed to cross the finish line in 18.5 overs, finishing at 165/8 to win by two wickets. Sophie Molineux chipped in with a valuable 11 off just five deliveries, striking two boundaries during a crucial phase of the chase. Garth remained unbeaten on four, while Tahlia McGrath contributed six runs. The Australian batters showed enough composure to navigate the pressure created by New Zealand’s bowling attack and complete the chase before the end of the 20-over limit.

For New Zealand, Plimmer’s 85 and Green’s half-century provided a strong foundation, but their bowling unit could not defend the total. Jess’s three-wicket haul ensured a competitive finish, yet Australia’s batting depth proved decisive in the closing stages.
