Napoli and Juventus had a rough weekend, and while Massimiliano Allegri and Luciano Spalletti aren’t in immediate danger of getting the axe, they are running out of time to turn things around and stay in contention for the UEFA Champions League.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Azzurri president Aurelio De Laurentiis was baffled by the coach’s decision to rotate heavily against Venezia. The squad came out very flat, and a second-half push wasn’t enough. They are in 9th position, trailing Inter and Lazio by nine points already. They hadn’t started this poorly since 2001. With further negative results, everyone would be under scrutiny, as their transfer-market strategy left much to be desired.
Juventus have done only slightly better than Napoli, recording one more draw and one fewer loss. They are also on the outside looking in at the top four, which is crucial financially.
The Bianconeri have done worse than last season, when Igor Tudor was fired after eight rounds because the management thought they had built a more competitive roster. They have a different brass now, and they continue to trust the gaffer. However, the results have been underwhelming. Plus, the locker room appears to be splintering, given some recent harsh remarks from Gleison Bremer and Francisco Conceiçao.
Both have been so inconsistent game to game, leaving their bosses looking completely out of sorts at times. The former are more invested in their manager, given his rich three-year contract. The time to take stock will likely come at the next break. It wouldn’t be surprising if at least one got the boot if things don’t improve, as there are very few positive signals.
