New Colts interim GM has ties to the Seattle Seahawks

It's been an exceedingly busy news day on Monday to both close out Week 6 and begin Week 7. The biggest news of course is related to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and the blood clots in his lungs, which will likely cause him to miss the remainder of the 2026 season. If it weren't for that bombshell, the biggest story of the day would likely be about the Indianapolis Colts firing their general manager Chris Ballard.

After ten years in Indy, the Chris Ballard era has come to an unceremonious end following the Colts' embarrassing home loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans. Indianapolis is now 2-4 on the year, and like 2-4 Philadelphia with the lack of Hurts, they are a team staring down the barrel of a lost season. With the Colts officially seeking new leadership, it is not beyond the pale to theorize they might be looking to blow it up and start fresh. At least partially, since this is a team without their 2027 first round draft pick.

Filling the role of interim general manager for the Colts is Ed Dodds, who is Indy's current assistant GM. Dodds will handle the personnel department, while head coach Shane Steichen will report directly to ownership. Who is Ed Dodds? Well, this is where the Seahawks might fit into this story.

Dodds has been with the Colts organization since 2017. Prior to that, he was an employee of the Seattle Seahawks from 2007-2016. He began his Seahawks stint as a scout, but by 2015 he had transitioned into Seattle's senior personnel executive, a role he held for two years before being hired by the Colts.

You can see where I'm going with this.

Dodds clearly has a connection with the Seahawks and his former boss John Schneider. I'm not suggesting this means Seattle is going to get their pick of the litter, for cheap, from the Colts. But so much of how the NFL world operates at that level is based on relationships. Perhaps Schneider and Dodds could come to terms on a player to help boost Seattle's chances this year.

All eyes, of course, will hone in on running back Jonathan Taylor considering the Seahawks' issues at running back. However, I'm not sure Taylor would solve Seattle's problems. No, Seattle does not have a dynamic back to lead their ground attack, but their line is atrocious right now. No one is running well, in part, because there is nowhere for them to run. What the Seahawks need is help on the interior of their line, and that help could look like star guard Quenton Nelson.

Nelson has been a Pro Bowler in each of his eight years in the NFL, and has been a three-time All-Pro. Yes, he is on an expiring contract, but that has never stopped John Schneider from making a move before. The risk of Nelson potentially being a half-year rental is more than worth it when trying to shore up an inconsistent offense that is currently holding a championship caliber defense back.

John Schneider once said he and his team are "in on every deal" around the league. Perhaps he can leverage previous working relationships with Dodds to manufacture another one.
