The tournament at the famous Barbican venue runs from Saturday 28th November to Sunday 6th December and is the first Triple Crown event of the season.

The all-time greats of the baize will be battling for a trophy which was first contested in 1977 and Mark Selby will defend the title, having beaten Judd Trump in last year’s final.

Here’s a pick of the five greatest finals in the history of the event:

1983 Alex Higgins 16-15 Steve Davis

John Higgins
John Higgins | Rob Matthews

Other than his World Championship victories in 1972 and 1982, this was the greatest moment of Higgins’ career as it was one of only a handful of wins over arch-rival Davis, and arguably the best ever fight-back in a UK Championship final. Davis marched into a 7-0 lead in Preston, before the mercurial Higgins recovered to 8-8. There was little between them in the concluding session but the ‘Hurricane’ got the better of the deciding frame before celebrating with his army of fans. “It was very important to me to beat Steve to show the public how good I am,” he said.

1990 Stephen Hendry 16-15 Steve Davis

Hendry beat Davis in both the 1989 and 1990 finals and those matches might be considered the passing of the baton between these two all-time greats. In fact those were the only meetings between the pair in Triple Crown finals. On this occasion, Hendry had an early 5-0 lead before Davis gradually clawed his way back and eventually led 15-14. In the 30th frame, Hendry trailed 49-0 but made one of the best clearances of his career, including a do-or-die pot on the final blue along a side cushion. He then made a break of 98 in the decider.

1994 Stephen Hendry 10-5 Ken Doherty

Hendry won the UK title five times in all but he often cites this final as the best performance of his career. He made an incredible seven centuries in the ten frames he won, breaks of 130, 114, 112, 110, 109, 106 and 106. That remains a joint record for any professional match, equalled by Ding Junhui in the 2016 World Championship semi-final, and Judd Trump in the 2019 Crucible final – both over a much longer format.

2010 John Higgins 10-9 Mark Williams

This was the last UK Championship staged in Telford, before the event found a permanent home in York. Williams seemed in control of the final when he led 9-5, before Higgins launched what turned out to be a career-best fight back. At 9-7, he trailed by 29 points on the final yellow, but got the snooker he needed and cleared the colours to stay alive then got the better of two more tense frames to seal his third and most recent UK title. “I thought 9-5 was a mountain to climb but I never gave up," said the Scot.

2014 Ronnie O’Sullivan 10-9 Judd Trump

Arguably the best final at the York Barbican, this match came 21 years after O’Sullivan first lifted the UK trophy at the age of 17 in 1993 – and amazingly the ‘Rocket’ is still going strong today. With a top break of 133, he stormed into a 9-4 lead, before Trump came all the way back to 9-9. The younger man then had an early chance in the decider but ran out of position on 14, and O’Sullivan punished him with a vital 51. “I can’t believe I’ve won it. I don’t want to be playing him in every final,” said O’Sullivan, who went on to conquer York in 2017, 2018 and 2023, bringing his tally to a record eight titles.
