Nottingham Forest fell to another unlucky defeat against Brentford on Saturday, falling further into the relegation zone as a result.

Oliver Glasner won’t believe how unlucky he is as he watched his side once again be the better team, yet Nottingham Forest lost another game, this time 2-0 against Brentford.

Here is what we learned from the defeat.

Xaver Schlager isn’t good enough for Nottingham Forest

For a second week running, we are left at a loss for just how bad Xaver Schlager is and how unsuited he is for Premier League football. Schlager was awful against Ipswich last weekend and was worse against Brentford.

Schlager was hooked at half-time by Glasner in favour of putting Ryan Yates into the midfield, and the number 22 was a vast improvement on the Austrian.

Schlager just doesn’t have the physical strengths needed in English football, and he shouldn’t be in Glasner’s starting midfield going forward.

Oliver Glasner makes Ola Aina verdict clear

Glasner made a statement at half-time, and it wasn’t only Schlager who found himself hooked. Ola Aina joined the midfielder on the bench for the second half.

Daniel Munoz came on, and it was a surprise that he didn’t start in truth, but the fact that Glasner felt strong enough about Aina’s decent display to take him off at half-time.

Glasner won’t be making this decision again, and it says a lot about Aina’s standing at the club right now.

Forest need a new striker in January

Liam Delap was slammed last weekend for his showing against Ipswich, but his performance against Brentford was perhaps even worse.

Delap was withdrawn with a 5.9 match rating on SofaScore, three shots, none of which hit the target. It was another performance that should concern the club and prove he needs proper support, not Chris Woods.

Forest have been linked with Jean-Philippe Mateta in January, and this would be a brilliant signing to take some of the shine off Delap and take away the pressure.

How unlucky can Glasner get?

It has been widely spoken about that Glasner’s Forest are massively underperforming expected points and goals. He has coached a top-six side, but his players just can’t find the net.

Forest had 14 shots on goal, and not one was on target prior to going 2-0 down. Forest once again boasted a greater expected goal tally than their opponents, but again just couldn’t finish as Tim Sherwood said on Sky Sports, explaining that “their finishing is so poor”.

Making things worse, Brentford’s opener came through an own goal, and their first shot on target was their second through Igor Thiago.

Glasner must feel like the most unfortunate man in the league right now as Forest drop into the relegation zone, knowing that he hasn’t done a whole lot to cause this.

Evangelos Marinakis’ patience is set to be tested

All season through, struggles and poor form, there has been a consistent message that the club are behind Glasner and believes in him getting things right eventually.

But Evangelos Marinakis’ patience is set to be well and truly tested this coming week and the next, because no matter the expected points or goals, Forest have one win all season, and this isn’t sustainable.

Next weekend, Manchester City visit the City Ground, and a heavy defeat there could make the upcoming international break one that needs change at Forest to get out of this relegation form.
