A urine sample taken from Chris Lynn on July 18, 2026, during T20 Blast Finals Day, returned a positive test for cocaine, leading to a one-month suspension imposed by the ECB's Cricket Regulator. Lynn was playing for Northamptonshire at the time and has since accepted the sanction in full.
The sample was sent to the World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited Laboratoire Anti-Dopage in France for analysis. The Cricket Regulator confirmed the outcome.
"The Cricketer’s urine sample was sent to the WADA-accredited Laboratory in the Laboratoire Anti-Dopage, France for analysis and returned Adverse Analytical Findings (“AAF”) for cocaine’s Metabolite benzoylecgonine. Cocaine is listed under section S.6A of the 2026 WADA Prohibited List as a Stimulant. It is a non-Specified Substance that is prohibited In Competition only. Cocaine is also specifically identified as a Substance of Abuse in the 2026 WADA Prohibited List," the report was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
On July 31, 2026, the Cricket Regulator notified Lynn of the adverse analytical findings and placed him under a provisional suspension from that date. When Lynn responded to the charge on August 20, 2026, he disclosed that his cocaine use had occurred on July 15 and 16, 2026, both of which preceded the Finals Day sample collection. The metabolite detected in the sample was consistent with that admitted use.
Two articles of the ECB's Anti-Doping Rules were initially cited against Lynn, but one charge was later withdrawn after it emerged that the cocaine concentration in his urine sample sat below the minimum level required to sustain a charge under WADA rules. A formal charge notice was served on September 23, 2026.

Lynn's legal position rested on the argument that his cocaine consumption constituted an out-of-competition Anti-Doping Rules violation with no connection to sport, a characterisation the Cricket Regulator ultimately accepted. The Regulator had originally pursued a three-month suspension, but in October 2026 it received evidence that Lynn had enrolled in and completed a substance abuse treatment programme. That confirmation led to the ban being reduced to one month. Because the provisional suspension had been running since July 31, 2026, the one month was considered fully served by August 30, 2026.
Lynn, who is 36 years old, holds the record as the all-time leading run-scorer in the Big Bash League, a distinction that underlines his status among the most destructive T20 batters Australia has produced. At international level, he appeared in 18 T20 matches and four one-day internationals for Australia before committing primarily to franchise cricket across the globe.
