Swansea fans have been united in their verdict on West Ham after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side claimed a crucial 1-0 victory in Wales, despite producing a performance that was far from convincing in the early Championship title tussle.

Divine Mukasa’s first-half strike secured three priceless points for the Hammers, who moved into second place and closed to within a point of the Championship leaders after 11 games.

But while West Ham supporters were celebrating a potentially season-defining result, Swansea fans took to social media to give their verdict on what they had witnessed.

And it was not particularly complimentary.

Swansea fans totally unimpressed by West Ham

The Swans faithful were left distinctly unimpressed by the Hammers’ display, with supporters suggesting they had seen little to convince them that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are the team to beat in the promotion race.

Some Swansea supporters were even more confident of their own title prospects, arguing that if West Ham represented the standard of their main competition, the Championship crown was there for the taking.

One Swansea fan summed up his thoughts at full-time, saying: “An undeserved defeat. If that’s the best in the league, we’ll be right up there. Ref was awful. Felt like not one single ball broke our way. (Goalkeeper) Vigs outstanding. Everyone is going to lose games and we certainly held our own. Top of the league. Still dare to dream.”

Another Jacks fan was even more brutal in his assessment, saying: “If West Ham are the standard of opposition we’re up against in this title race, then we’ll absolutely p— it.”

Swansea supporter Ian Parfitt felt West Ham were totally underwhelming and blamed the referee for the defeat.

“Big game of the day ruined by a guy who I can only assume won a raffle to referee the game today…. pathetic and way out of his depth! Absolutely f— all in West Ham apart from a strong, well organised defence and we were far too passive in key areas today.”

The X account Vital Swansea echoed the general consensus, saying: “West Ham weren’t all that. Bit disappointing the way we conceded and couldn’t score but not a lot to be worried about. We’re not far off.”

Social media is full of similar opinions from the Welsh side.

On the surface, it is easy to understand the reaction.

Swansea fans miss the point as West Ham show the mark of champions

West Ham were hardly spectacular in possession, struggled to create sustained attacking pressure and spent long periods making the contest an unnecessarily nervy affair.

But the Swansea supporters criticising the Hammers may have missed the bigger picture.

West Ham barely got out of second gear offensively, yet secured a clean sheet against the league leaders away from home. Mads Hermansen did not have a shot to save, while Swansea’s best opportunity saw Ben Cabango hit the crossbar from close range.

The Hammers’ defensive organisation was outstanding, with Konstantinos Mavropanos and Max Kilman particularly impressive as Nuno’s side protected their advantage.

This was a team that knew how to suffer, remain disciplined and get over the line when the pressure was on.

As Hammers News highlighted in our player ratings, there is a reason why winning when you are not at your best is so often described as the mark of champions.

West Ham certainly had their fair share of luck in Wales, but they also did the hard work required to earn it.

And the victory could have been even more comfortable had the Hammers’ forwards been more clinical.

Pablo missed a glorious opportunity to make it 2-0, while Taty Castellanos and Joel Piroe also failed to make the most of their chances after coming off the bench. Their wastefulness ensured Swansea remained in the contest until the final whistle.

That is the genuine concern for Nuno, rather than whether opposition supporters were impressed by his team’s performance.

West Ham have now put themselves in an excellent position after the first quarter of the Championship campaign, with only a point separating them from the summit. They have demonstrated that they can grind out results even when their attacking play is below par.

Interestingly, a scan of social media suggests Hammers fans were not particularly impressed by Swansea either, with many feeling that Charlton, Watford and QPR have provided sterner tests.

The Swans may feel they were the better side, but the table will not remember who looked more impressive on the afternoon.

It will remember who took the three points.

West Ham did exactly that, and if Nuno can improve his side’s attacking efficiency without sacrificing their defensive solidity, the Hammers may yet have the last laugh in the promotion race.
