Not Wirtz, Mudryk or Antony - Premier League's biggest ever flop revealed

Express Sport readers have decided the biggest Premier League flop of all time.

Many of football's biggest names have tried their luck in the Premier League, only to crumble under the weight of expectation. Countless stars have thrived in Spain, Italy, France or Germany before falling short in England's top flight. The transition to the Premier League's fast-paced, physical style is difficult for many players, with only the very best managing to hold their own. While the likes of Erling Haaland, Bruno Fernandes and Martin Odegaard are among those to have succeeded in recent years, many others have failed.

Florian Wirtz is a prime example, with the Germany international having struggled to perform for Liverpool since moving to Anfield in a blockbuster £116million deal last summer.

He looks a shadow of his former self in the Premier League and was recently called out by former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, who pleaded with Andoni Iraola to take him out of the firing line.

Over the last few weeks, some observers have dubbed Wirtz the biggest flop in Premier League history, but Express Sport readers believe another player deserves that unwanted title.

Wirtz only received 16 per cent of the vote in our latest football poll, which asked readers who they would name as the Premier League's biggest disappointment.

Jadon Sancho ended up as the player with the most votes, with 37 per cent of respondents picking the former Manchester United winger.

He is currently without a club after being released by the Red Devils last summer. They spent £73m to sign him from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021, having pursued his signature for several years.

However, he never managed to make his mark at Old Trafford and was heavily criticised for his attitude away from the pitch.

Sancho's former United team-mate Antony was in second place, receiving 24 per cent of the vote, with Wirtz in third.

Mykhaylo Mudryk finished fourth with 12 per cent of the vote, ahead of ex-Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe (seven per cent) and Chelsea struggler Romelu Lukaku (four per cent).

Unlike many of the others, Wirtz still has the opportunity to reverse his reputation and will be hoping to find some form at Liverpool over the course of this season.

However, if he continues to struggle on a weekly basis, he will be remembered as one of the worst big-money signings in Premier League history.
