Napoli are set to get busy in several roles in January and could bring in a new defender after failing to do so last summer, but they haven’t pivoted away from their previous targets, Oumar Solet and Federico Gatti, Tuttomercatoweb reports.
The Frenchman was supposed to join Inter last summer, but the buyers didn’t like what they saw from his medicals. They eventually put John Stones under contract instead. He didn’t transfer at all, and his start to the season hasn’t been particularly great, amid his club’s struggles. He has a manageable price tag for top-team standards.
In addition to Solet, Napoli continue to keep tabs on Federico Gatti. He’s not a full-time starter at Juventus, but he’s been playing more lately because of a more defensive-minded scheme. He has featured seven times so far, scoring and assisting once.
While Luciano Spalletti doesn’t seem to rate the Italian center-back too highly, he was a staple under Massimiliano Allegri. The Partenopei have gotten solid performances only from Amir Rrahmani and Rafa Marin so far. Instead, their other men have been underwhelming, and their lone addition, Benoit Badiashile, is nursing a pretty serious thigh injury.
The position isn’t exactly a priority, as they at least have depth, even though they aren’t particularly good, while they are thinner and older elsewhere. Their main issue is that Sam Beukema hasn’t panned out despite his big fee, which makes him hard to offload. The former might be a little too anarchic for Allegri’s style. His early performances and health have only justified Inter’s reservations. Instead, the Old Lady should hold on to one of its few gritty and energetic players.
