One of the most highly anticipated rookie classes in NBA history will make their debut this October.
No. 2 overall pick and Canton native Darryn Peterson will make his long-awaited NBA debut in the Utah Jazz's 2026-27 season opener on Oct. 21. This matchup will be extra special as Peterson faces off against Cameron Boozer, who was selected No. 3 in the same draft.
The former Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy star already showed what he was capable of during the preseason. Now the 6-foot-5 guard coming out of Kansas will look to stamp his name in his first official contest.
"I have a ton of pride being from Canton, Ohio. It’s a place where not a lot of people make it out. It’s a place where chasing a dream isn’t the usual. So, I carry that everywhere I go. Keeps me humble. Keeps me grateful to know where I came from," Peterson said in a recent interview with Andscape.
"The McCollom brothers [Errick and CJ] were inspirations to me growing up because it showed me that you can make it from Canton," he said. "That isn’t a thing that’s super normal where we’re from. So, they were role models for me, and then I was able to work out with them as I got older. That was huge for my preparation as well. Appreciated it every time."

The Utah Jazz were at the bottom of the standings last year, finishing 22-60 and placing 15th in the Western Conference. The team looks to take a step now, with a roster boasting former all-stars Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr., as well as sophomore Ace Bailey, Brice Sensabaugh and Keyonte George.
The Memphis Grizzlies didn't fare much better, finishing 25-70 and earning the No. 13 spot in the West. The team will have a new look thanks to the addition of Boozer and the move to trade Ja Morant. Other notable players include 7-footer Zach Edey, Cedric Coward and GG Jackson.
The Jazz are favored by 2.5 points according to FanDuel.
