All Blacks legend Dan Carter has revealed the funny moment his eldest son snubbed him as a kicking coach.

Carter is one of the greatest fly-halves in rugby history. He won two Rugby World Cups and broke several records during his career.

But that was not enough to impress his eldest son, Marco.

When Marco wanted help with his kicking, he had two other All Blacks stars in mind.

They were Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo'unga.

Carter's son wants another All Blacks legend

Speaking to The Rugby Journal in 2025, Carter shared the funny story about his son.

Marco wanted some extra kicking lessons. But instead of asking his dad, he had another idea.

He wanted Carter to arrange lessons with Barrett or Mo'unga.

The request left Carter's wife, Honor, in fits of laughter.

It was only later that Marco seemed to remember just how good his dad had been.

"Actually, you know something about kicking, don't you?" he asked.

Carter scored a record 1,598 points in 112 Tests for New Zealand.

He also won two World Cups and became one of the biggest names in rugby.

But as Marco proved, even an All Blacks legend can struggle to impress his own children.

Since retiring, Carter has spent more time with his wife, Honor, and their four sons.

He also helps out with junior rugby. He sometimes coaches and even referees matches.

But Carter admits his sons often listen more to their own coaches than to him.

Family life also played a big part in his decision to retire.

When one of his sons heard that Carter would not return to Japan to play rugby, he was thrilled.

In fact, he called it the best news he had ever heard.

For Carter, it showed just how much his children wanted him at home.

His sons may one day follow in his footsteps and become rugby stars themselves.

But for now, it seems Carter still has some work to do if he wants to be their kicking coach.
