Liverpool has sent a message of support to the Spanish second division club CD Tenerife after its striker, Jesus de Miguel, died following a serious collision during a game.
The 30-year-old forward suffered head and chest injuries after FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono collided with him in the center circle. The foul saw him get sent off, with medical staff immediately ushered onto the field and both sets of players in distress.
De Miguel's condition was initially described as "stable but serious" on Monday. However, his situation then deteriorated, and he tragically passed away in the early hours of Tuesday.
"Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda," a club statement said.
"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today.
"The family of Jesus de Miguel is grateful for each and every expression of support received, and also requests, from the bottom of their hearts, the utmost respect for their privacy during these terrible times."
Liverpool was among the clubs to respond to the post on social media, with the soccer world in mourning.
"Such devastating news," it said. "Our thoughts and condolences are with Jesus's family, friends and everyone at CD Tenerife at this tragic time."
Tenerife and Andorra were level at 2-2 seven minutes into stoppage time when the incident occurred. The referee abandoned the fixture when the severity of the injury became clear.
FC Andorra said: "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife."
