The Rams lead the NFL in yardage margin but have won just two games all year.
Things went from bad to worse for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday when they lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 18-16, at home. It was their second game this season with fewer than 300 yards and fewer than 20 points scored, which is particularly alarming considering the Cardinals went into that game ranked 32nd in points allowed per game.
The Rams' 286 yards were their fewest of the season, dropping them further down the rankings in that category. Entering Week 7, they're now 21st in points per game but third in yards per game. As Sheil Kapadia points out, the Rams are 2-4 despite having the best yardage margin in the NFL, outgaining their opponents by a league-high 644 yards.
It's hard to believe they only have two wins despite outgaining their opponents by such a large number of yards.
It helps that the Rams went three straight weeks against the Giants, Broncos and Eagles where they gained at least 400 yards and held their opponents under 260 yards. They outgained the Giants by 299 yards and the Eagles by 243, so that's where a lot of their yardage margin comes from.
They've been outgained by their opponents twice this season: The 49ers had 89 more yards in Week 1 and the Cardinals had 52 more yards on Sunday.
Yards often translate to points, but not in the case of the Rams. They've moved the ball easily at times but when they reach scoring range, penalties or turnovers come back to bite them. Plus, their special teams are the worst in the NFL, which has also taken points off the board, too.
