WATCHET Town paid their first ever visit to the impressive Isle of Wedmore facilities last Saturday and ended up losing 5-0 in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League despite a gritty first half showing.
Playing against the howling wind and driving rain ,the threadbare Red & Blacks outfit found themselves a goal down inside the first five minutes when a viciously inswinging corner deceived on-loan keeper Luke Vernon amidst a posse of players as he could only help the ball in off his own upright.
In the face of horrendous conditions but a perfectly playable surface Watchet were understandably under the cosh for much of the first 45 minutes where they were indebted to Wellington custodian Vernon - who was replacing the unavailable Regan Gallagher - for some astonishing saves when the home side seemed certain to add to their tally.
On the break Billy Jones went close to levelling the scores with two shots angled past the far post plus one saved by the keeper after a Tom Sparks pass. The visitors had an even better chance to make it 1-1 when Jones was brought down inside the box, but the last kick of the half saw his penalty spot kick strike the outside of a post.
Once again Watchet's second half performance failed to match their first and when Ollie Webber had the misfortune to turn a cross over his own line Wedmore were in cruise control. With only the one substitute on offer and three or four players limping, the Red & Blacks were opened up at will and shipped three more goals despite the best efforts of Eben Harding at the heart of their defence.
