Somebody in Catalonia has been watching Spurs closely, and it isn’t just for the football. Journalist Ekrem Konur, relayed via Transfer Feed, reports that Barcelona are planning opening moves for a long-term chase, and they’re keeping a January loan in their back pocket as a possible shortcut.
Lucas Bergvall, that’s who. The 20-year-old Swede arrived from Djurgarden in 2024 for a reported £8.5m, and he’s rarely looked out of place since. He carries the ball out of tight spaces, shrugs off pressure with a sharp turn, and spots passes most people miss. Raw in places? Sure. Brave? Absolutely.
Roberto de Zerbi wants midfielders who demand the ball and play through pressure, so Bergvall’s skills suit that plan nicely. Still, the queue is long, because Rodrigo Bentancur and Xavi Simons all compete for minutes in the middle, and that squeeze explains why a loan might tempt some people.
No, and it isn’t close. Bergvall’s deal runs to 2030, so Spurs sit in the driving seat, and nobody can force their hand. A loan to Barcelona would hand the Catalans a free look at a player they want to buy, plus a strong claim when talks turn serious next summer. That’s a gift, not a favour.
De Zerbi’s system also demands rotation. His sides press high, run hard and leave midfielders gasping by the 70th minute, so Bergvall’s legs will matter across a long season. Losing depth in January, with no time to replace it, would feel reckless.
Then comes the development angle. Bergvall improves quickest when he trains alongside Palhinha’s bite and Simons’ invention, and De Zerbi obsesses over individual detail. Barcelona’s midfield is stacked, so he’d probably spend plenty of evenings on the bench there.
If he wants more minutes, give him cup starts and Premier League cameos instead. Spurs can offer a clearer path than Camp Nou ever will.
