Emi Martinez is set for a period of time out of the Chelsea team as he recovers from the jaw injury he suffered at Everton.
Martinez suffered a heavy collision in the 66th minute of at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, clashing with Jarrad Branthwaite in a game Chelsea won 2-0 thanks to two goals from Pedro Neto.
While the Everton centre-back was deemed fine to continue, Martinez spent a long period of time on the ground being seen to by Chelsea club doctors and was eventually stretchered off the pitch, replaced by Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper Mike Penders and transported to hospital.
“As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests,” said manager Xabi Alonso after the game. Later on Saturday evening,
Martinez posted an update on Instagram that confirmed he had undergone surgery on his jaw injury.
Reports from Martinez’s homeland Argentina indicate the experienced goalkeeper will be out for around 45 days and possibly as long as 60 days.
That would mean the 34-year-old will be absent for Argentina’s two matches next month as well as plenty of Chelsea games.
Alonso will provide an update on Martinez’s timeframe for a return when he speaks in his next press conference later this week, but which Chelsea matches would Martinez miss if the suggestions he is to be sidelined for 45–60 days are on the money?
