Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Josh Simmons was kicked out of a team meeting by head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Earlier this week, Kansas City placed Simmons, their 2025 first-round pick, on injured reserve due to a back injury. Simmons was inactive for the Chiefs' first five games this season as a result of the injury. During a team meeting a day before the offensive tackle was placed on injured reserve, Simmons was reportedly sitting with his feet up.
Unhappy with how Simmons was sitting, Reid told him to put his feet down. That then led Simmons to push back against his head coach, telling Reid he needed to sit in that position because of his back and hips, according to ESPN.
Reid then told Simmons to get treatment from the Chiefs' athletic trainers if he was in pain, which disrupted the meeting, and the exchange between the pair continued until Mahomes chimed in to tell his teammate to leave the room to get treatment.
Simmons left the room, but did not leave the team facility. He later apologized to Reid and team leadership, telling them he could have handled the situation better.
The Chiefs star missed practice on Wednesday, with Kansas City's injury report listing him out with a "back/not injury related-personal." Then, a day later, he was placed on injured reserve due to the bulging, herniated disk in his lower back.
Simmons has been out injured since August. During the summer, he reported discomfort in his calf, and Kansas City's medical staff believed it was due to a back injury, which an MRI confirmed.
It was recommended to the Chiefs tackle that he rehab the injury rather than have surgery.
He will now miss Kansas City's next four games, the first of which is Sunday night's clash with the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.
The earliest Kansas City can welcome Simmons back to the 53-man roster is Week 11, when the team hosts the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 22.
Since joining the Chiefs after they selected him with the 32nd pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, he has played just eight games of a possible 22.
Last season, he missed time from Week 6 through Week 9 due to personal reasons, then dislocated and fractured his wrist against the Dallas Cowboys later in the season, which caused him to miss the remainder of his rookie year.
With Simmons unavailable so far this season for Kansas City, UDFA Kahlil Benson has operated at left tackle for Kansas City, protecting Mahomes' blindside. He is expected to remain the Chiefs starter, with veteran Jaylon Moore having moved over to right tackle.
However, Moore is unavailable to play against the Seahawks due to a concussion, which means Joshua Ezeudu will start at right tackle on Sunday in Seattle.
