A contract dispute has not slowed Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov on the ice.

Kucherov scored the overtime winner in Saturday’s 4-3 comeback victory over the Minnesota Wild. It was the first goal since Kucherov requested a trade on Oct. 30, but that drought does not mean his play has slacked off. It’s easy to forget the Kucherov contract situation during games. He leads the Lightning with 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) and shot attempts (123). According to NHL Edge statistics, Kucherov is in the 95th percentile for most miles skated per game (3.88 average) and the 92nd percentile for max skating speed at 23.03 mph.

Kucherov Sets Up, Then Scores Winner Against Wild

Saturday’s game was a prime display of what Kucherov brings to the Lightning.

The two-time Hart Trophy winner had nine shots on goal against the Wild, his season high and the most since he had 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 4, 2025. That came on 20 shot attempts, his best in a game since he had 20 against the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 9, 2025.

The winning goal came on a 4-on-3, the Lightning’s third power-play goal of the game. Wild forward Matt Boldy tripped Kucherov 2:30 into the extra session to initiate the Lightning’s man advantage. Kucherov took center ice, received a feed from Jake Guentzel, and fired the puck off the right post and into the net 3:23 into OT. It was Kucherov’s 10th career OT winner. He also assisted on Guentzel’s goal in the second period.

Nikita Kucherov Contract Situation

The story of a rift between Kucherov and Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois took the hockey world by surprise.

Kucherov’s trade request came a few weeks into the final season of an eight-year, $76 million contract extension that he signed in 2018 (numbers according to Spotrac). On Nov. 2, Kucherov said his trade request was more about “poor communication and respect” than money.

At 33, Kucherov seeks one more big contract. Reports indicate that Kucherov’s camp seeks a six-year deal for around $20 million per season, but the most recent Lightning offer was the same length at $15 million AAV.

Kucherov leads the franchise in career points with 1,146, in assists with 740, and points per game at 1.28, among many other categories. The 13th-year veteran has been with the organization since the Lightning drafted him in the second round (58th overall) of the 2011 Draft. He won the Hart Trophy in 2018-19 and 2025-26, owns two Stanley Cup rings, and helped lead the Lightning to two other Cup Final appearances.

A player’s form could decline amid a contract dispute, or he might not see the ice at all (the Detroit Red Wings suspending Dylan Larkin after his trade request is a prime example). But for Kucherov, there has been no sign of that at all.
