Xabi Alonso has confirmed the six players in Chelsea’s leadership group following Reece James’ injury. James is set to be sidelined for around three months after undergoing knee surgery earlier this week.
James’ injury has left many speculating about who will wear the armband for the foreseeable future. Levi Colwill captained the Blues in Saturday’s 5-1 win against Bournemouth, but several other players have worn the armband recently.
Alonso has now revealed the six players in Chelsea’s leadership group, including a summer signing who has already made a significant impact.
No timeline has been given for his return…
Chelsea fans already knew five players in the leadership group: Reece James, Moises Caicedo, Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer and Jordan Henderson. However, Xabi Alonso has now named a sixth player, despite having joined the club only around six weeks ago.
Emiliano Martinez, who replaced Robert Sanchez towards the end of the summer transfer window, is now part of Chelsea’s leadership group. The 2022 World Cup winner was considered an upgrade not only on the pitch, but also in the dressing room, given his vast experience at the highest level.
Martinez has been unable to prevent Chelsea from conceding goals, but he has still made his presence felt at Stamford Bridge. The Argentine has made several important saves, and his command of the penalty area has been clear to see.
Alonso told the Chelsea website about his captaincy options: “They have their own personality; each one is different. Levi is different to Reece; Moi is different to Cole, Hendo and Dibu [Martinez] as well.
“That’s why it’s important to me to have a good mix of personalities and qualities, and players at different stages of their careers. I think we’re in a good place in that way.”
