Lucas Herrington explains his Fulham withdrawal as he opens up on Hull City feelings

Lucas Herrington had no complaints about being withdrawn at half-time of Hull City's dismal 1-0 loss at Fulham on Saturday.

Despite being one of the Tigers' better performers on a day to forget in the capital, Herrington was taken off by Sergej Jakirovic, with midfielder Tim Iroegbunam coming on in his place. His manager did suggest it wasn't down to the 19-year-old's performance, saying the Australian starlet played well.

Iroegbunam's arrival necessitated a change in shape, with Jakirovic moving to a back four, and putting an extra body in midfield in a bid to try and spark City into life in a game where they started poorly, and didn't improve.

Booked in the first 10 minutes on just his second Premier League start after making his full debut at Newcastle United, Herrington says he's content with the decisions made by the Tigers' coaching staff.

"The coaching staff thought it was what was best for the team," he told Stan Sport of his half-time withdrawal. "No complaints, just whatever is best for the team, it's the best decision.

"It was tough," he continued in reflection of a bad day at the office for his side. "They played well, it's a hard place to come. I don't think we were sort of at it from the start, so it's hard when you start a game, and they're on top. The second half was, I thought, better, though we just struggled to create chances. It was a good performance from them, and they deserved a win.

"I don't think there's anything to put it down to. I just think it's just one of those days where they were better, and we weren't on our game, and we got punished for it."

City know they must show a response when they host Brentford at the MKM Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Given the absence of Nobel Mendy, Herrington could well get the nod to start his first home game in the Premier League, and it's an occasion he's looking forward to.

"It's always great to play in front of the home fans, a great opportunity to bounce back from a couple of results that we wanted better from. It's a great opportunity next week to take three points, and we'll focus on that."

It's been something of a whirlwind year for the teenager following his move from Brisbane to the USA in January and then to East Yorkshire in the summer, whilst playing in a World Cup, but it's a period he's enjoying, and rightly so,

"I'm loving it," he continued. "It's been a great experience. I've loved my move over here, great staff, great group of boys and a great club to be at. I've been welcomed very well, yeah, loving every minute."
