The Raiders left Oakland, for the second time, after the 2019 season. On Sunday, the Raiders return to the Bay Area for their first regular-season game since relocating to Las Vegas.
And, as Matt Barrows of The Athletic notes, the renewal of the rivalry could result in plenty of activity in the 3,500-square-foot holding facility at Levi’s Stadium.
The Raiders played a regular-season game there in 2018. That day, there were 32 arrests. It was the first time the 49ers had hosted a Raiders game since a preseason contest in 2011 that featured multiple incidents of fan violence resulted in a suspension of the annual low-travel-cost exhibition get-together.
Regardless of whether things get interesting in the stands, concourses, parking lots, etc., the game brings plenty of on-field intrigue. Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan have a relationship that dates back to Cousins’s rookie year with Washington, in 2012. 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris was Atlanta’s head coach during Cousins’s two seasons with the Falcons.
And Raiders coach Klint Kubiak was the 49ers’ passing game coordinator in 2023. Klint’s brother, Klay, has been the 49ers’ offensive coordinator since 2025.
The Raiders are unexpectedly in contention for an AFC playoff berth, at 5-5. The 49ers control the NFC West at 6-1, and they’re in position to force the road to the Super Bowl through Santa Clara.
