Bognor Regis Town held at Cobham - report, reaction and gallery

Kaya Tshaka’s late goal gave Bognor Regis Town a point at Cobham in a 2-2 draw but it wasn’t enough for the Rocks to stay top of the Isthmian South Central division.

Jersey Bulls took over at the summit and now lead the league by a point after their 3-1 home win over AFC Portchester.

Manager Danny Hollands said that although the Cobham clash was a frustrating affair he saw positives – and he would be rallying his troops ahead of two upcoming home games. Rocks host Hendon on Saturday then Egham Town on Tuesday.

Henry McDonald gave Bognor an early lead when he struck to make it 1-0 in the seventh minute but just five minutes later Derick Hayford scored for 1-1.

Then Cobham turned things around when they took a 2-1 lead after 35 minutes through Charlie Alexiou and carried their advantage in to the break.

Tshaka drew Bognor level on 79 minutes and honours remained even although there was time for Alexiou to get a second yellow and receive his marching orders in the 95th minute in front of 225 fans at the Reg Madgwick Stadium.

Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel, Hollands said: “It was a frustrating 90 minutes to watch really. We started well obviously went one up and could've potentially gone two up and we didn't and then the manner of the goals we conceded… I said to the boys ‘it's not acceptable’.

“Set pieces are a big part of the game these days and people work at them — to be fair to my delivery was good… but it’s first and second contacts.

“You can’t come out the box not marking up people otherwise you get punished. We showed a reaction second half; they had chances, we had chances and we got a point and it was probably a fair result.

“But that’s football – so we have got to pick ourselves and go again and we have got two home games now to make sure that we keep improving and moving forward.”

The long awaited return of Luke Pardoe, Jake Cope and Ben Anderson to proceeding – the former two from the bench – provided a positive but Charlie Wassmer went off injured and it is too early to say how long he might be sidelined.

And Hollands added: “Yes it's a positive that players are coming back in and hopefully in the next few games we can have a full strength squad to pick from and then it becomes competitive for the right reasons – and each man for the shirt, then and make sure that your performance is valid and you keep your shirt by doing that.”
