Fresh from his brutal first defence of the WBO heavyweight title, Daniel Dubois has revealed that he is targeting a showdown with a former world champion, keen for what he believes would be a ‘ground-breaking’ fight.
Dubois got his hands on the WBO crown five months ago when he overcame Fabio Wardley in a Fight of the Year candidate in Manchester, but Wardley was quick to activate his rematch clause and secure a second meeting.
On Saturday, Dubois needed only two rounds to dispatch of the Ipswich knockout artist this time around to announce himself as the man to beat in the heavyweight division.
Following the win, Dubois told Sky Sports of his desire to take on Tyson Fury, in what would be a heavyweight title unification if ‘The Gypsy King’ can beat Anthony Joshua and gets his hands on the WBA (Super) title in December.
“That [fight with Fury] would be ground-breaking. That will be the next level for me. I’ve fought everyone then, really, from this era. I [will] have fought them all. So yeah, Fury is the last one.
“Fury is a fighting man, I am sure that he would want it. We will see how he does with ‘AJ’ [Anthony Joshua] and then let’s see.
“I am sure that Frank [Warren] would love to make that fight. This is what boxing is. This is the highest level, really.”
Fury is unlikely to come next for ‘Triple D’, with Dubois being linked to a return to action as soon as February, where Joseph Parker and WBC champion Agit Kabayel are deemed to be the frontrunners for the opposing corner.
