Ascary situation transpired in the Premier League on Saturday. During the Chelsea vs. Everton match at Hill Dickinson Stadium, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was involved in a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite. "Dibu" went into a fencing posture and appeared to lose consciousness for a moment.
Martinez was tended to by the medical staff, which administered oxygen, wrapped him in a neck brace, and then carried him off the field on a stretcher. The Chelsea goalkeeper was taken to a local hospital for further testing. Given how scary the collision was and Martinez being unable to move much, fans were rightly scared about his health.
Thankfully, it appears that Martinez avoided a worst-case scenario. While he's still expected to miss time, the worst of the aftermath was a fracture in his jaw that required surgery on Saturday. It wasn't a complete jaw fracture, so Martinez is expected to be out of action for at least 40 days, according to Argentinian journalist Cesar Luis Merlo.
21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders stepped in for Martinez at goalkeeper to finish out the Everton game. He ended up making one save, and Chelsea won the match 2-0. 22-year-old Gabriel Slonina and 23-year-old Teddy Sharman-Lowe will likely compete during training to take Penders' backup role.
