The Los Angeles Chargers' struggles continue after the team dropped to 0-6 on the year following a 22-6 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, leaving head coach Jim Harbaugh with a case of deja vu.
The 2026 NFL season has been a disaster for Los Angeles. While there was much excitement about the hiring of former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as the Chargers' offensive coordinator, the move has not panned out. The Chargers offense again looked anemic, with quarterback Justin Herbert throwing for 204 yards passing and an interception, his eighth of the year.
Following the defeat to Kansas City, Harbaugh was noncommittal about whether McDaniel would continue calling plays for the Chargers, as the Chargers' offense was struggling. "I’m just going to ask point blank, is Mike going to continue calling plays?" a reporter asked Harbaugh.
"We're going to look at everything; the job I'm doing starts with me," Harbaugh replied.
"We'll watch this [game back] and get with our offensive coaches. I see the effort, I see the work being put in in the meetings, on the practice field, and to get that to translate to the field is what's necessary.
"Feel bad for our players, our team, our coaches, our fans. And [offense] needs to be addressed."
For Harbaugh, the Chargers being 0-6 is a familiar experience. He spent 15 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback, with Harbaugh as the starter for the 2000 Chargers, who started 0-6 that year.
Hired by Los Angeles in January 2024, Harbaugh led Los Angeles to back-to-back 11-6 seasons in 2024 and 2025, making the playoffs on both occasions.
However, with Los Angeles looking like the NFL's worst team, questions about Harbaugh's future will continue. Following Los Angeles' defeat to the Denver Broncos a week prior, the 62-year-old admitted he could not think of where he had been "more mad" at himself.
"I can’t think of a time where I’ve been more mad at myself," said Harbaugh of Los Angeles' 2026 struggles.
"This team works so hard, played so valiantly. And yeah, I take 100% accountability for making that decision and turned the momentum of the game. So it was the wrong one, and I got to be right on those."
Thankfully for the Chargers, their record this year cannot get any worse, as the team is on a bye week.
They return the week after for the all-Los Angeles matchup against the 2-4 Rams, who themselves lost on Sunday at SoFi Stadium to the Arizona Cardinals in what was the biggest upset of Week 6.
