Moyes relieved to see Everton make the best of unconvincing display

Though David Moyes felt Everton's performance against Coventry City was not entirely convincing, he was enthused by the way they fought back to win 3-1.

Thierno Barry scored twice and provided an assist for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as the Toffees recovered after falling behind to Yann Gboho's opener at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton have now won three straight games in all competitions, the last two of which have been in the Premier League, ahead of the international break.

It was just the third instance of Everton going 1-0 down in the second half of a Premier League game before coming back to win by more than one goal, along with 3-1 wins over West Ham in November 2008 and Burnley in September 2021.

The victory came on a landmark occasion for Moyes, as he oversaw his 592nd game across two stints in charge of Everton – that is the joint-most of any manager in the club's history, alongside two-time First Division title-winner Harry Catterick.

Moyes still felt there was plenty his side could have done better, though, after they only managed one shot more than their opponents (15 to 14) and gave up three Opta-defined big chances.

"I wasn't quite so sure about it being a good performance. We got a result, but I have to say Coventry made it really difficult for us," Moyes told BBC Match of the Day.

"You can see why they have picked up some really good results. They won at Nottingham Forest and beat Sunderland the other week.

"They had a couple of decisions that might have gone in their favour tonight. But in the end, we got the goals that mattered, and when you win in the Premier League you have to take it, because it is so hard to get the wins."

But Moyes was delighted to see Barry continue his prolific start to the season, with the Frenchman's brace taking him to 10 goals in 13 outings this campaign.

That is already more goals than he netted in 41 matches across all competitions last season (eight), and Manchester City's Erling Haaland (14) is the only Premier League player to outscore him in 2026-27.

"We gave away a really poor goal but the reaction from there was really good. It was important that Thierno Barry got another couple of goals tonight, which was huge for us," Moyes said.

"We've always liked him, and we want him to keep scoring. He's missed quite a few chances, but tonight he got important goals for us.

"He's becoming an important piece for us and he's got 10 goals, which is really good."

Everton's first game back after the international break is away to Brentford on November 23, before they host Liverpool in the Merseyside derby six days later.
