Graeme McDowell should be embarrassed by what he said about fans criticizing LIV Golf this year

On Monday, Graeme McDowell became the latest player to announce that he will not be pursuing the opportunity to play on LIV Golf 2.0 in 2027.

There has been a mass exodus from LIV Golf over the past couple of weeks, with big names like Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Ian Poulter and most recently, Graeme McDowell, all deciding to move on.

With Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund no longer providing financial backing for the league, their future looks bleak.

There will seemingly be a 2.0 version, but with a serious lack of star power, it will be incredibly difficult for them to get their new product off the ground.

After joining LIV in 2022, McDowell highlighted the guaranteed income as one of the main reasons why he jumped ship from the PGA Tour.

“Honestly, I played 18 months of the worst golf I have probably my whole career right after Covid,” he said.

“There are no guarantees in this sport. When something came along and offered me nothing but upside, it was a very compelling opportunity at that point in my career.”

And now, without the guarantee of huge financial rewards, the 47-year-old has decided that he wants a new challenge.

Graeme McDowell should be embarrassed by what he said about fans criticizing LIV Golf

McDowell clearly didn’t fancy the prospect of hanging around on LIV Golf, with decreased purses, weaker fields and a more condensed schedule coming into play.

The Northern Irishman took to his social media channels to announce his decision.

“I’ve decided not to pursue LIV 2.0,“ McDowell’s statement began.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had over the last four years and want to thank everyone who has been a part of that journey.

“I look forward to the next chapter in my career.“

However, the humility that McDowell showed in his message was completely absent when he came out fighting back in May in response to suggestions that LIV Golf could fold.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund had just announced that they would no longer be financially supporting LIV Golf.

As a result, many golf fans predicted that the end was nigh for LIV. That has, of course, proven to be absolutely correct.

However, McDowell fired back at those who suggested LIV was on its last legs. In fact, he spoke about golf fans in a really derogatory manner during an appearance on the Beyond The Clubhouse.

“It’s been a tough few weeks for us,“ he said.

“All the haters have been flooding back out of their holes. The public noise and the narrative is disappointing.

“I get it, it’s always been there. As I say, as a league and as players, we’ve always faced that.“

The sheer audacity of Graeme McDowell to talk down to golf fans who were making a perfectly legitimate point was quite astounding.

He should be thoroughly embarrassed by those remarks now, as should everyone else involved with LIV Golf who tried to belittle anyone who dared speak out against the league.

As everyone has continually said, had the LIV Golf hierarchy and their players had even a slight hint of humility about them from the start, they may have had a chance of succeeding.

Instead, the vast majority of them acted as if they were superior to everyone else and arrogantly spoke to the golfing public like we were all idiots.

Now they are all being made to pay for that approach.
