With the trade deadline only a few days away, there are a few names that have popped up for the Washington Commanders if they decide to trade away players. One of them is cornerback Mike Sainristil, who has played on defense and special teams for Washington so far this season.
Here is what Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated had to say about Sainristil, as well as edge rusher Dorance Armstrong, being trade candidates.
“There’s certainly no fire sale happening in Washington. Still, veteran edge Dorance Armstrong and former second-round nickel Mike Sainristil came up as potential trade names if the team winds up moving anyone (though the Commanders haven't engaged with teams on Sainristil and do want to keep working with him to get him out of his rut).”
Washington had high hopes for Sainristil when they drafted him back in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His rookie season was promising with nearly 100 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Last season was also solid with four interceptions and another forced fumble.
However, this season has been much different. He is the worst cornerback in the NFL by PFF grade. Furthermore, he is no longer considered a top corner on the roster and has seen an increased special teams role, making him an ideal trade candidate if they could get decent draft capital for him.
It would make sense for Washington to move on from Sainristil. He's barely playing at cornerback now, as most of his snaps have come on special teams recently.
