Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal farewell match ‘set to take place with different manager’ after furious Jorge Jesus bust-up

CRISTIANO RONALDO will have a new manager in the dugout for his Portugal farewell match after announcing his retirement.

Ronaldo, 41, revealed the shock news he was walking away from the Portuguese national team following his fallout with boss Jorge Jesus.

It comes just weeks after Jesus dropped the veteran for the team’s clash against Norway in September.

The former Manchester United star quit the camp in fury and has now decided to retire from Portugal duty.

The forward – who scored 146 goals in 234 appearances – won’t be saying goodbye immediately as he’s set to play in one final match to cap off over a decade with the team.

But according to ESPN, Jesus won’t be leading the team for Ronaldo‘s last game after their bitter row.

Instead, former Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari – who gave Ronaldo his debut back in 2004 – could return to the dugout.

Ronaldo had a close relationship with Scolari during his youth after supporting him following the death of his father aged 20.

The report also claims Ronaldo’s old Portugal coach Fernando Santos is not in the running to lead the team for the match.

Ronaldo worked under Santos between 2014 and 2022 and – while he won Euro 2016 – the pair are not on good terms after the coached benched the legendary star during the 2022 World Cup.

Ronaldo said he considered quitting Portugal before insisting he was still “ready to play” for his team.

But now he has made a U-turn and has decided to close his chapter following an incredible reign.

Ronaldo said in a statement: “The day has come back for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team.

“I never felt it belonged to me alone. But for 23 years I had the privilege and the responsibility of wearing it, defending it, and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world.

“Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision. Because some decisions are not made with the mind alone. They are also made with the heart.

“A journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever has come to an end.

“When I look back at everything with the national team, I don’t just see the matches, goals, records or trophies.

“I see people. I see the Portuguese people living abroad who, for 90 minutes, felt a little closer to home. I see millions of Portuguese people I have never met but who became part of my life.

“Because at the end of the day, football is so much bigger than a game. Football is about people.”

Jesus opted to keep things civil despite their feud as he added: “Cristiano is a global icon, an example for Portugal and the national team.

“I had a huge photo of him put up in our auditorium so that all the young players could look up to him every single day.

“I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side. “But I have to accept his decision.

“He will always have a place in the hearts of the Portuguese people. “He will always be an icon of Portuguese football.”
